Would you like to save this full guide?
Tucked along the shores of Lake Huron in Northeast Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, Ossineke is the kind of place that feels like a well-kept secret.
With its stunning waterfront views, quirky roadside attractions, and the kind of small-town charm that makes you want to stay a little longer, this little gem is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

A Place of History & Spirit
Long before Ossineke became the charming small town it is today, the indigenous peoples had a settlement near the mouth of Devil River.
They called their place “Shin-go-baw-WAW-SIN-EKE-go-baw-wat”, which translates to “Place of the Image Stones, Leave More Than One Gift For the Great Spirit.”
This deep spiritual connection to the land is still felt in the serene beauty of the area, where history and nature blend seamlessly.

A Natural Paradise
If you’re looking for a place to reconnect with nature, Ossineke has you covered.
The sandy beaches along Lake Huron are perfect for stretching out in the sun, taking a dip, or launching a kayak for a peaceful paddle along the shoreline.
Fishing? Absolutely. The waters here are teeming with walleye, bass, and perch, so bring your gear and prepare to reel in dinner.
And if you’re up for a bit of an adventure, Negwegon State Park is just south of town and offers miles of rustic hiking trails and pristine, untouched beaches.
Fun Fact: Negwegon State Park was designated as a dark sky preserve in 2016 and is a popular spot to see incredible views of the night sky.
Ossineke State Forest Campground, located right on the Lake Huron shoreline just a mile east of Ossineke, is another great spot to escape into nature. Campers and curious travelers can explore sandy beaches, cast a line, have a picnic, or just take a leisurely walk as the sights and sounds of nature unfold around them.

Paul Bunyan & Babe the Blue Ox
One of Ossineke’s most iconic sights? A towering Paul Bunyan and his trusty sidekick, Babe the Blue Ox, standing tall along US-23.
Legends of the giant and his trusty ox are said to have greatly influenced Michigan – including carving out three of the Great Lakes and giving Michigan its familiar mitten shape.
This larger-than-life roadside attraction is a nod to Michigan’s deep-rooted lumbering history and makes for a classic photo op. The 25-foot Paul Bunyan statue was built in 1953 and paired with the 10-foot-tall statue of Babe, which was built in 1950. The duo has stood in its current location since 2006.
Kids love it, history buffs appreciate it, and road-trippers can’t resist pulling over for a quick snapshot.
The attraction is one of many Paul Bunyan statues that can be found in Michigan and there’s another one just up the road in Alpena.

Dinosaur Gardens
Dinosaur Gardens is a must-visit if you love a little nostalgia mixed with adventure. This old-school attraction has delighted visitors since the 1930s, with life-sized dinosaur sculptures hidden among the trees.
The park features more than two dozen prehistoric creatures which were crafted by Paul Domke, who was said to take great pride in constructing each creature to actual size – and made several trips to the Smithsonian Institution to get the information he needed to get each creation just right.
It’s like stepping into a time machine, except with a prehistoric twist. Walk the shaded trails, challenge yourself to a round of mini-golf, enjoy a sweet treat from a frozen yogurt bar, or dig for fossils.
Whether you’re a kid or just a kid at heart, there’s something special about stumbling upon a giant brontosaurus or Tyrannosaurus Rex in the woods.

Local Flavors & Small-Town Charm
No trip to Ossineke is complete without a stop at Connie’s Cafe.
This local favorite is famous for its giant, plate-sized cinnamon rolls (seriously, don’t leave without trying one), hearty breakfasts, and friendly service that makes you feel like family.
Tip: The cinnamon rolls go quickly, so get to Connie’s as early as possible to increase your chances of snagging one.
Whether you’re craving a stack of fluffy pancakes or a classic diner-style burger, Connie’s serves up comfort food that hits the spot.
Don’t miss visiting the Garden of Dreams outside Connie’s Cafe. Founded in 2011, the garden is a place to reflect and remember all those who have been affected by cancer. The garden features a suncatcher made with 1,200 pieces of glass.

A Perfect Up North Getaway
Ossineke isn’t the kind of place that makes headlines, and that’s exactly why you’ll love it. It’s where you go when you want to slow down, soak in the beauty of Lake Huron, and experience the simple joys of a small-town escape.
Whether you’re here for nature, nostalgia, or just a really big cinnamon roll, Ossineke is proof that sometimes, the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress – you just have to experience it for yourself.
