When we’re planning summer adventures in Michigan, we’re always looking for destinations the whole family will genuinely enjoy, including Mom and Dad. With nearly four years between our kids, finding places that appeal to both of them isn’t always easy. We also love discovering under-the-radar destinations, so the Jackson area quickly found its way onto our summer bucket list.

Whether you’re planning a full weekend getaway or just a day trip, Jackson has something for every age and interest. From outdoor adventures to great local food and family-friendly attractions, this area makes it easy to fill an itinerary without feeling rushed.

A special thank you to Experience Jackson for partnering with Awesome Mitten to help make this family adventure possible.

Must-See Summer Events in Jackson

Family Night at The Cascades

Wednesdays nights in June through mid-August

If you’re visiting on a Wednesday, don’t miss Family Night at The Cascades. Each week features a different theme with character meet-and-greets, live music, and family activities. You can listen to the music while the kids cool off at the splash pad, grab a snack from the concession stand, and then meet their favorite characters before ending the evening with the Grand Light Show at the Cascades.

Jackson Hot Air Jubilee

July 17-19, 2026

The Jackson Hot Air Jubilee is one of the area’s signature summer events, bringing colorful hot air balloons, family activities, food vendors, and plenty of excitement to the community. If you’re visiting in July, it’s well worth planning your trip around.

Ella Sharp Festivals & Concerts

Throughout the summer, the Ella Sharp Museum is the perfect backdrop for outdoor concerts and festivals.

The Art, Beer & Wine Festival (held on the first Saturday in June) was one of the highlights of our summer. We loved browsing the booths filled with artwork from talented local artists, while the kids had a blast in the family-friendly kid zone. It was clear that local organizations put a lot of thought into creating hands-on activities, making it an event that everyone in our family enjoyed.

Things to Do in Jackson This Summer

Visit the Iconic Cascade Falls and Splash Pad

Sparks Foundation County Park is an easy stop for families visiting Jackson. We grabbed a scoop from Cascades Ice Cream Co. before letting the kids burn off some energy at the playground and enjoying a walk through the park.

If you’re looking for even more fun, the iconic Cascade Falls attraction and the on-site splash pad are both available for an additional admission fee during the summer.

Explore Jackson Through Its Murals

On our first visit to Jackson a few years ago, I was blown away by all of the public art. As someone who has always pulled over for a roadside attraction or mural, I felt like I had really hit the jackpot.

After our visit, I learned about Bright Walls. It was an annual public art festival that transformed downtown Jackson into an open-air gallery. From 2018 to 2022, nationally and internationally recognized artists created dozens of large-scale murals throughout the city.

My kids love finding a new favorite on each visit to Jackson; you can find all of the murals and artists here.

Explore Dahlem Environmental Education Center

Dahlem Environmental Education Center was one of our favorite places to explore. We spotted butterflies, watched a snapping turtle sunbathe near the pond, and spent time at the natural playground. It’s the perfect stop for families who enjoy letting kids connect with nature at their own pace.

All Aboard the Lost Railway Museum

If you have a train lover in the family, the Lost Railway Museum is worth a stop. The family can climb aboard historic railcars, explore the exhibits, and learn about Jackson’s railroad history through interactive displays. It’s a small but fun, hands-on museum that offers a glimpse into the city’s past while keeping younger visitors engaged.

Visit Lowry’s Little Flock Farm

You’ll find Lowry’s Little Flock Farm just outside Jackson in Horton. It’s one of those places that feels like a hidden gem. Once we arrived, we met friendly alpacas, llamas, Scottish Highland cows, goats, rabbits, and chickens. We chose to feed some of the animals while we were there for a small fee for a grain bin.

Don’t leave without stopping by the bakery during their open hours for a fresh pastry or sweet treat. And on Fridays, the farm even offers a free family storytime!

Tour the Ye Old Carriage Shop

One of the highlights of our visit to the Jackson area was touring the Ye Ole Carriage Shop in Spring Arbor with Judi, the owner’s wife, who is an integral part of the museum. She was incredibly kind and knowledgeable, sharing the stories behind the museum’s impressive collection, including one of the country’s largest collections of Jackson-built automobiles.

While we loved admiring the beautifully restored cars, my daughter and I were just as fascinated by the vintage kitchen, nostalgic signs, and collection of pedal cars.

Touring is available by appointment only and is worth the visit.

Hike the Trails at Ella Sharp Park

Ella Sharp Park offers options for both a quick walk and a longer hike. The trails wind through woodlands and wetlands, making it easy to choose a route that fits your schedule. We opted for a shorter loop, which was a great way to enjoy the park before heading to our next stop. You can find more about the trails here.

Family-Friendly Places to Eat in Jackson

The Jackson area is full of family-friendly places to eat. Whether you have a more choosy eater or one who loves exploring different cuisines, there is something for everyone. Here are a few we have loved this summer.

Grab a Burger at RJ’s Burgers & Ice Cream Co.

During our last visit to Jackson, we had stopped into RJ’s for a scoop of ice cream, and I eyed smashburgers on the grill. I made a mental note that the next time we were in the area for lunch or dinner, we needed to give them a try. They were such a hit with the whole family. After we ate our burgers, we each grabbed a scoop to enjoy on our mural walk.

Grab a Coffee at Cattleman’s Coffee & Provisions

We started one of our mornings with coffee at Cattleman’s Coffee & Provisions. The café had a small play area for kids, an outdoor patio, and plenty of space to relax inside to while enjoying your drink.

Lunch at Asher Creek Creamery & Deli

Asher Creek Creamery & Deli was one of our favorite places to grab lunch. The front windows offered gorgeous natural light that filled the space. The sandwiches were big enough for sharing, and after lunch, we couldn’t pass up a scoop of ice cream before heading to our next stop.

Pizza Night at Klavon’s

Klavon’s was the perfect place to end a day of exploring Jackson. Known for its handcrafted artisan pizzas, the menu offers everything from Detroit-style to Chicago-style stuffed pizza, making it easy to find something everyone will love.

And get the garlic knots, trust us.

Booher's Fresh Market &Amp; Diner

Enjoy a Meal at Booher’s Fresh Market & Diner

If you’re looking for a homemade meal, stop by Booher’s Fresh Market & Diner. We were impressed by how fresh everything tasted, especially the hand-cut homemade fries. With generous portions and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere, it was easy to see why this small diner was packed on a Wednesday night.
