Day 1: Cafe Santé | Boyne City

Recommended by Leah Tennant

For a delicious European-style meal with views of Lake Charlevoix, Cafe Santé is a must-try in Boyne City. With rich, dark wood interiors and plenty of window seating (and patio seating when the weather cooperates), it’s the perfect spot for a cozy date night dinner.

Looking for menu recommendations? Try the melt-in-your-mouth salmon or the crispy, wood-fired Margherita pizza.

Day 2: Atlas | Brooklyn

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

With a tag line like “Fresh, global flavors. Upbeat, relaxed vibe. Genuine Hospitality”, you know that you are in for a great dining experience. Atlas can be found right in downtown Brooklyn at 123 N. Main St. You’ll feel transported to somewhere coastal as soon as you walk in.

if you are looking for an entree to start with, my husband is still raves about the Greek Chicken Platter with herb roasted potatoes, sauteed bell peppers & onions, hummus, tzatziki, and toasted naan!

Day 3: What’s the Dill | Detroit

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

You think you love pickles? Put your pickle obsession to the test with a full carry-out menu at What’s the Dill. What started as pop-ups around Detroit has quickly become a Southeast Michigan staple. If you want to take your turkey sandwich up a notch, drop the bread and try it on a pickle!

If you are looking for keto-friendly, vegan, and gluten-free options, you will find plenty here!

Chicken Pasty In Front Of The Mackinac Bridge At Straits State Park

Day 4: Lehto’s Pasties | St. Ignace

Recommended by Leah Tennant

Lehto’s Pasties is one of my favorite places to stop for a pasty in the Upper Peninsula. The beauty of pasties is that they are the ultimate travel food. Originally crafted as hand-held meals for miners, the portable pasty makes a filling meal that can be eaten anywhere.

Lehto’s has two locations in St. Ignace. The original US-2 location is known for serving the classic traditional beef pasty, which is rich and savory. The downtown St. Ignace shop offers a fuller menu with beef, chicken, and veggie options. Each one has its own unique flavor, and honestly, you really can’t go wrong with any choice.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy Lehto’s is to grab a pasty to go and drive to the nearby Straits State Park for a pasty picnic with a view of the Mackinac Bridge.

Day 5: Tavern 109 | Williamston

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

If you love a little bit of history mixed with your meal, you will love this stop in Williamston, Michigan. Tavern 109 sits at the site of the former National Bank and the effort they made during the restoration to feature original elements does not go unnoticed.

Tavern 109 features my favorite cobb salad I have ever had. And don’t miss their truffle fries. The garlic aioli is worth the drive to Williamston alone.  When the weather is right, you will even find a few outdoor seating options in “the courtyard,” and it’s a magical experience.

Electric Ramen In Brighton

Day 6: Electric Ramen | Brighton

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

I had my first slurp of Electric Ramen when they opened in Howell, and now you will find the same great flavors but with a Brighton address.

When they reopened, I was excited and knew I had to go back to try a craft ramen bowl when I was in the area. I landed on the Roasted Chicken and Dumplings and it was the perfect mix of modern ramen with classic flavors. If you are looking for comfort in a bowl but a restaurant with some personality, you will find it at Electric Ramen.

Wildflour Bakery, Cadillac

Day 7: Wildflour Bakery | Cadillac

Recommended by Leah Tennant

Wildflour Bakery in Cadillac has the best vibes and amazing service. Their menu features freshly baked pastries, including scones, cannolis, quiche, and croissants, and quick lunch options like salads and sandwiches. To top it off, they’re known for their wide assortment of boba teas (and the staff is really helpful if you’re new to boba, like I was).

The space feels cozy and a little quirky, with a Wildflour sign made from rolling pins and a full wall calendar where you can leave notes for your future self on a specific date.

There’s really nothing like spending a relaxing morning at a bakery with a fresh pastry and sweet tea.

The Cabin In Mt. Pleasant

Day 8: The Cabin | Mt. Pleasant

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

The Cabin in Mt. Pleasant is a Mid-Michigan staple. On game day, you will find this place packed to the brim with people fueling up for a pre-game meal. It was voted the “Best Pizza in Mt. Pleasant” by CM Life, and you will see why. Don’t miss out on ordering the famous Cabin Sticks if you really want to make the whole table happy.

Insider tip: Bring a sharpie, it’s the one time you can let the kids draw on the walls!

Hamburger Mikey In Muskegon

Day 9: Hamburger Mikey | Muskegon

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

I first stumbled on Hamber Mikey, this gem of a burger place, when we were camping at the Muskegon State Park. I was just looking for an easy meal for the kids and I found the best burgers in West Michigan!

With a focus on using fresh ingredients and hand-cut fries, this is easily one of my favorite restaurants in Michigan for a quick and tasty meal.

Maple + Batter In Bay Harbor

Day 10: Maple + Batter | Bay Harbor

Recommended by Leah Tennant

If brunch is your favorite meal, you should check out Maple & Batter in Bay Harbor.

Since Maple + Batter exclusively serves brunch, they are experts at their craft. I’d recommend the decadent breakfast charcuterie board brimming with waffles, pancakes, honey biscuits, fresh fruit, syrup, and whipped cream. Or the savory breakfast tacos with crispy hashbrowns.

Their candied bacon is also legendary!

Ernie's Market In Oak Park

Day 11: Ernie’s Market | Oak Park

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

Ever just fall in love with a place just by the story of it alone? That’s how it was for me and Ernie’s Market. I heard the murmurings of 70 years and three generations of sandwich making and knew that I needed to give it a try. I am always looking for a good sandwich and the buzz around the kindness, community, and connection of Ernie’s in Detroit landed it on my must-try list.

Somehow the stars aligned for my visit and there wasn’t a line out the door (I had seen pictures and knew it was a common occurrence). And the man himself, Ernie, was there on a Saturday! Since I was “newbie,” Ernie came out to greet me and shared with me a bit of his story. While the sandwich was an 11/10, the warmth and experience made this a place I would recommend to everyone.

Day 12: Noto’s at the Bil-Mar | Grand Haven

Recommended by Nancy Wolf

Located on Lake Michigan’s shoreline in Grand Haven, Noto’s at the Bil-Mar is the perfect spot to watch the sunset and listen to the waves as you dine.  This picturesque setting includes a view of the Grand Haven Pier and Lighthouse, which are beloved landmarks in the area.

Noto’s specializes in wood-fired pizzas, but has a wide variety of foods ranging from sandwiches, soups, and salads to fresh fish, seafood, steak, and pasta dishes. The Lake Perch is to die for, and the pasta dishes are a must-try!  They also have an amazing wine list as well as a creative cocktail menu.

My most recent favorite is their Mahi-Mahi Tacos, the best fish tacos I have ever eaten, hands down.

Clyde's Drive In, Sault Ste Marie

Day 13: Clyde’s Drive-In | Sault St Marie

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

If you or your family love watching freighters, at Clyde’s Drive-In in the Soo, you get both a meal and a show because of its proximity to the St. Mary’s River. You can enjoy your burger the classic way with curbside service, at the counter, or outside on the picnic tables – which is my family’s favorite way!

Day 14: Palette Bistro | Petoskey

Recommended by Leah Tennant

The Petoskey Area is full of restaurants with gorgeous views. One of my favorites is Palette Bistro, which overlooks Bayfront Park on the Little Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan. With warm hardwood floors and striking artwork throughout, Palette Bistro feels like dining inside an art gallery.

The menu here features Mediterranean food with several gluten-free and vegetarian options. For me, the standout dish was the perfectly-spiced Muhammara served with tasty pita bread.

Note: Palette Bistro is currently closed for renovations after extensive damage from a burst pipe over the winter. Follow the Palette Bistro Facebook page for the latest updates and look forward to refreshed menu options and dining spaces when they reopen!

El Oasis In Lansing

Day 15: El Oasis | Lansing

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

Michigan travel has led me to some amazing dining experiences, from elegant waterside restaurants to small diners that locals swear by. Finding El Oasis felt like discovering a hidden gem just off Michigan Avenue in Lansing, Michigan. With a few picnic tables, a water fountain, and some of the friendliest customer service around, it truly feels like a little oasis on a beautiful spring day.

Get the birria tacos and thank me later.

They also have two other El Oasis locations near Lansing, so make sure to check their website for hours and addresses.

Day 16: Littlebird | Grand Rapids

Recommended by Jessica Bassett

Littlebird is a little gem right in the heart of Monroe Center in downtown Grand Rapids. Small in size but BIG in flavor, Littlebird serves up lots of yummy locally sourced meat, produce, beer, and wine.

Some must-tries at Littlebird:

  • The bread pudding French toast is to die for if you head in for brunch.
  • The hangar steak is absolutely de-lish for dinner.
  • If the smashed cucumbers make it back on the seasonal menu this summer, DO NOT hesitate – it’s a MUST.
Blake's Tasting Room In Armada

Day 17: Blake’s Tasting Room | Armada

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

Located at Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill, Blake’s Tasting Room adds a year-round casual dining option to the traditional cider mill experience. Plus, they offer a stellar Sunday brunch every week.

Blake’s own cider, beer, and wine are always on tap at the Tasting Room. They may have a smaller food menu, but every dish delivers big flavor. Thoughtfully crafted with fresh ingredients, this is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal after a day on the farm.

My go-to order is always a handheld sandwich and the truffle fries paired with their American Apple cider.

The Stray Dog, New Buffalo

Day 18: The Stray Dog | New Buffalo

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

If you’ve ever been to New Buffalo, you’ve heard of The Stray Dog Bar & Grill. I grew up in the area and spent birthdays on their 21+ deck celebrating with close friends. As trips would bring me back to Harbor County, I was able to share my love of the Stray Dog with my children, and now it’s their most requested restaurant repeat.

I almost always order the fish tacos, sans the pico for me, but I am sure you would love it. I just can’t do onions.  The kids search for refreshers – frozen lemonade is their favorite! It’s the perfect pre- or post-beach stop.

Day 19: The Toasted Pickle | Grand Haven

Recommended by Leah Tennant

The Toasted Pickle is a West Michigan staple for amazing sandwiches. On my last visit, I tried the best grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. The Green Goddess has a layer of avocado and pesto that takes grilled cheese to a whole new level. It’s so good, it’s even been featured on the Food Network.

To top it off, their sweet, fresh-squeezed lemonade pairs perfectly with their savory sandwiches and fries. Stick with a classic lemonade or try an added flavor – the raspberry lemonade was delicious!

So far, I’ve only been to the Grand Haven location, but there are also locations in Rockford and Grand Rapids.

Shipwreck Cafe, Empire

Day 20: Shipwreck Cafe | Empire

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

I am not quite sure how I had visited Empire, Michigan, about a dozen times before discovering Shipwreck Cafe. Being an avid sandwich consumer, as soon as I saw their tag line on the sign of soup, salad, and sandwiches, I knew this was the place for me. My daughter can never say no to a good cup of chicken noodle soup and a hot sandwich is one of my favorite things to enjoy after a day at the beach.

If you’re in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area, making a stop at Shipwreck Cafe will round out your whole trip.

Freshwater Tavern, Gladstone

Day 21: Freshwater Tavern | Gladstone

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

Made from scratch? Yes, please. Waterside dining? Don’t have to tell me twice! I was originally staying at the Terrace Bay Hotel and could not pass up a meal by the water at Freshwater Tavern. The atmosphere, food, and service easily land this as one of my favorite Michigan dining experiences.

Mr. Foisie's Pasties In Cadillac

Day 22: Mr. Foisie’s Pasties | Cadillac

Recommended by Leah Tennant

I’ve never met a Michigan pasty shop I didn’t like, and Mr. Foisie’s Pasties is one of my favorites.

Mr. Foisie’s Pasties has classic pasty options – beef, chicken, and vegetarian. I tried the beef and vegetarian varieties, and both were hearty and delicious. Flavorful veggies, spices, and meat wrapped in a warm, decoratively twisted crust make an amazing meal.

Outside, you’ll find picnic tables if you’d like to dine al fresco. Inside, there are tables and chairs and a healthy dose of quirky personality. Push pin maps for visitors to mark their hometowns fill the wall. Handmade succulent planters for sale by a local artist hang in the window.

Day 23: Bird Creek Farms | Port Austin

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

Bird Creek Farms was one of my favorite stops when we were exploring the thumbcoast of Michigan a few summers ago. Now, every time we are in the Port Austin area, if we have a meal out, I make sure it’s at this charming little restaurant.

The tenderloin steak bites might be worth the drive itself, but it’s the vibes that we keep coming back for. The patio on a summer evening just can’t be beat. We wandered over to say hello to the chickens during our last visit and got a good game of cornhole in before our food was up. It’s a place that invites you to slow down but delivers flavors in a big way.

Tom Cat Tavern, Three Oaks
Tom Cat Tavern | photo by Amanda Shaffer

Day 24: Tom Cat Tavern | Three Oaks

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

Downtown Three Oaks has transformed in many ways since I was a child. Gone is the dime store and the pharmacy and now you’ll find more antique shops, studios, and art galleries. You’ll still find some of the old, Driers Meat Market and Big C Lumber, for example.

Tom Cat Tavern is one of the places that feels vintage and brand new all in one. It sits where my childhood pub diner did. A wave of nostalgia rushes over me every time I visit, as I spent my childhood doing homework in those booths. You’ll find the classics here with Tom Cat Tavern’s twist of modern flair. I’m still trying to recreate the fried chicken cobb salad I had, but just keep missing the mark.

Day 25: NARA Sushi & Hibachi Steakhouse | West Bloomfield Township

Recommended by Ciera Trice

If you’re looking for a fun dining experience for the whole family, be sure to check out NARA Sushi & Hibachi Steakhouse in Bloomfield Township.

The hibachi table chefs serve up laughter, smiles, and good food! Reservations are highly recommended on weekends or special holidays. There is also a lounge dining area, if you’d rather skip the hibachi experience and get straight to the meal.

The chicken and shrimp hibachi platter, along with the spicy California roll are always a great choice. They also have plenty of options for vegetarians and can accommodate food allergies. If you have young kids who are not adventurous eaters, their kids’ menu has tasty chicken tenders and other kid staple entrees as well.

Day 26: Virginia Coney Island & Jackson Coney Island | Jackson

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

If you’re going to try a coney dog for the first time, Jackson feels like the place to do it.

With a couple of longtime spots right across from each other, we turned lunch into a head-to-head between two Jackson staples: Jackson Coney Island and Virginia Coney Island, both established in 1914.

Both spots lean into that classic diner feel, with all the staples you’d expect, but the coney dogs are the reason you’re here.

We each had a favorite, but that’s part of it. You really have to try both and decide for yourself.

Pizza Flight At The Mitten Brewing Co. In Grand Rapids

Day 27: The Mitten Brewing Co. | Grand Rapids

Recommended by Leah Tennant

Have you ever had a pizza flight? It’s the perfect choice when you want to try everything on the menu!

A fun baseball-themed brewery with plenty of Detroit Tigers memorabilia on the walls, The Mitten Brewing Co. offers a pizza flight where you can choose any six pizza flavors on the menu. All the pizza flavors I tried were great, but the Brickhouse Bee Sting with pepperoni, bacon, red onion, jalapenos, and hot honey drizzle is the one I’m still thinking about!

The Dairy Store, Lansing

Day 28: The Dairy Store | East Lansing

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

The Dairy Store in East Lansing isn’t a full restaurant, but it still earns a spot on this list for how well it does a few simple things. Located on Michigan State’s campus, it’s best known for its student-made ice cream, with rotating flavors and classics that keep people coming back.

But the small food menu is worth paying attention to as well. The grilled cheese and tomato soup is the perfect combo on a cool Michigan day.

It tastes great and is affordable, which is exactly why it stands out. We had to include at least one ice cream spot on this list, and this felt like the right one.

Day 29: Brandy’s Harbortown | Bay Harbor

Recommended by Leah Tennant

Located within the scenic Village of Bay Harbor, Brandy’s Harbortown has tasty food with a beautiful harbor view.

Brandy’s strikes the perfect balance as a versatile dining spot. It’s a place I’d recommend for a relaxed date night or a family-friendly dinner out with the kids.

The burgers and seasoned fries always hit the spot for dinner, and on certain nights, you can enjoy music while you eat.

Day 30: Brooklyn Boyz Pizzeria | Bay City

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

We recently took a trip to Bay City for a little spring getaway and Brooklyn Boyz was on our itinerary. Although I have been to Bay City more than a dozen times, I hadn’t stumbled on this gem before. This Italian pizzeria blew us away. I ordered the chicken parmesan and the rest of my family enjoyed a cheese pizza. But first, we had to start with the infamous homemade garlic knots. These garlic knots have now ruined any other breadstick for my six-year-old, as she instantly compares them to the basket of bread we had at Pizza Boyz.

If you are looking for an authentic New York-style pizza or pasta dish in the Go Great Lakes Bay area, look no further.

Crane's Pie Pantry In Fennville
Crane’s Pie Pantry | photo by Amanda Shaffer

Day 31: Crane’s Pie Pantry | Fennville

Recommended by Amanda Shaffer

I was first introduced to Crane’s Pie Pantry years ago after a crisp September morning of apple picking just down the road. My mother-in-law suggested we stop in for lunch, and I remember being a little confused. A bakery for lunch?

She explained that it was also a restaurant, and once we walked in, it all made sense. The place was full of people enjoying a fall day, but we were seated quickly and ended up having one of those meals where everyone orders something different and everything is good.

We left saying we’d be back, and we have been many times since, even though we live a couple of hours away. It’s one of those places that always delivers.

And if you go, don’t skip the fried pickles.

  1. The Holiday Grill in Dearborn gives a variety of meals with large portions. They even have a senior’s menu with soup, salad or coleslaw, the entree and your choice of rice pudding or ice cream.
