Fire the Cannon

Every morning from May through October, the cannon at Fort Mackinac booms atop a 150-foot cliff, offering a unique and historic way to start your day.

Visitors can not only witness this impressive display but also have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fire the cannon themselves.

To secure a spot, be sure to request a reservation at least 48 hours in advance by calling 906-847-3328.

While at the fort, take time to explore the well-preserved historic buildings, interactive exhibits, and stunning views of the Straits of Mackinac. Reenactments, musket firings, and costumed interpreters bring history to life, making Fort Mackinac a must-visit for history buffs and families alike.

See the Sunrise/Sunset

Mackinac Island is one of the best places in Michigan to experience breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

For an unforgettable sunrise, stand at Arch Rock and watch as the first light of the day illuminates the crystal-clear waters of Lake Huron. Alternatively, rent a kayak or paddleboard and glide into the horizon as the sun rises over the water—an experience both peaceful and invigorating.

To catch a picture-perfect sunset, head to the west side of the island, also known as the Sunset Side. Great viewing locations include Sunset Rock, the lawn of the Grand Hotel, and British Landing.

For a more immersive experience, consider taking a sunset cruise, where you can enjoy the golden hues of the setting sun from the water while sipping a refreshing beverage.

Hike to the Highest Point

Peak baggers and adventure seekers should make their way to Fort Holmes, the highest point on Mackinac Island at 325 feet above sea level. This lesser-known historic site is a reconstructed military outpost offering panoramic views of the island and surrounding waters.

The journey to Fort Holmes is just as rewarding as the destination. As you hike through the island’s wooded regions, you’ll pass by other iconic landmarks like Skull Cave and Anne’s Tablet. Along the way, keep an eye out for deer, vibrant wildflowers, and other hidden gems of the island’s natural beauty.

Explore the Island Loop

Mackinac Island’s perimeter road, Lake Shore Drive (also known as M-185), is the only state highway in the U.S. where motor vehicles are banned. Instead, this 8.2-mile loop is a paradise for bikers, runners, and walkers who want to take in the island’s beauty at a leisurely pace.

Rent a bike from one of the island’s many rental shops or bring your own and embark on a scenic ride around the island.

Along the way, you’ll pass natural wonders such as Devil’s Kitchen, Arch Rock, and stunning beachfront views of the Mackinac Bridge. Stop for a picnic at British Landing, skip rocks at Windermere Point, or take a refreshing dip in the lake.

If biking isn’t your thing, a leisurely walk along the shore provides plenty of opportunities to soak in the sights and snap gorgeous photos.

See the Stars

With minimal light pollution, Mackinac Island offers some of the best stargazing in Michigan. Premier spots include Fort Holmes, British Landing, Arch Rock, and Windermere Point. On clear nights, you’ll see an awe-inspiring display of stars, constellations, and the Milky Way stretching across the sky.

For an even more magical experience, check the Space Weather Forecast to see if there’s a chance to catch the Northern Lights.

The best viewing is in locations with unobstructed views of the northern sky, so bring a blanket, find a quiet spot, and let nature’s light show take your breath away.
