Best Things to Do, See, and Explore in Tawas, Michigan | #MittenTrip
If you’ve been reading me for a while, you know I love Michigan (even though I live in Ohio). So much so that we invested in some real estate with two other families right on Lake Huron in Tawas, Michigan. We want to be able to explore everything Michigan has to offer, and this will open the door!
We just had a family vacation in East Tawas, which you can guess is just east of Tawas City. It’s a beautiful area with lots to do, and within close driving distance from lots to do. If you like lakes, forests, cute towns, and flies, you’ll love Tawas.
This wasn’t our first trip to this area. I’ve written about it before and about the stops we made on our road trip up north. Check out my Central Michigan Guide here.
East Tawas
This time, we stayed at a vacation rental in East Tawas right on the water. We enjoyed kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding, and swimming on Lake Huron.
I also enjoyed putting aloe on my sunburn because it’s deceivingly so nice out (not so hot), that you don’t realize how strong the sun is.
Tawas City
The town of Tawas City is pretty adorable. It’s got a little downtown strip with an ice cream shop, Ben Franklin store, movie theater, fudge shop, and more. Every Labor Day, they have a festival right by the water. We attended two years ago and saw it set up this time, although we didn’t go.
We went to Marion’s Dairy Bar for ice cream (ahem, two nights in a row). They’re only open through end of Labor Day week, and open back up again in May. It’s real good.
After we got ice cream, we walked across the street to walk around the pier. The boats are beautiful at sunset.
We also tried out a new restaurant called the Boathouse Beer Co. and Boozery. We all tried different things, but I highly recommend what I got which was their french onion soup and a BLT salad. Prices were decent and food was good. It’s right across the street from Lake Huron, so you have a view as well!
Since we had 8 people, we went for the 2.5-foot pizza from G’s Pizzeria (Only $46, I mean, it’s a deal!) We went in to pick it up around 6pm on Saturday when it was really crowded. It was fun to get that giant pizza box through the door. But it’s good.
Tawas Point State Park
We visited the park one day and took the tour of the lighthouse, which includes letting you walk the 85 steps to the top to see the view overlooking the area. The tour guides were very nice and knowledgeable. It didn’t take too long, and house actually has air conditioning which is nice in the summer!
Canoeing in Huron-Manistee National Forest
We haven’t begun to scratch the surface of all the activities in this particular area, but this time we went canoeing. We rented canoes from a company called Rollway Resort. It was $40 per 2-person canoe, and it was 2.5 hours from Thompson’s Landing back to the Rollway parking lot. They drop you off at the area with the canoes and you float back, dock your canoe and then you’re minutes from where you parked.
Other than our canoe flipping and me yelling profanities at my husband, it was a great experience.
We’re already planning our next trip to Tawas City. And there will be many, many more to come! Have you been to this area?
