Mackinac Island is pure magic – horse-drawn carriages, charming Victorian architecture, and breathtaking views of the Straits of Mackinac. But not every experience on the island is straight out of a Pure Michigan ad.

To make sure your visit is nothing short of amazing, here are nine things you’ll definitely want to avoid on Mackinac Island...

1. Walking Straight Off the Ferry Without a Plan

You step off the ferry, take a deep breath of fresh island air, and then—boom!—you’re caught in a wave of confused tourists trying to decide where to go next.

Mackinac Island may be small, but it’s packed with attractions. Have at least a rough idea of what you want to do before you arrive, or you’ll spend half your day just figuring it out.

TIP: Grab a copy of the Mackinac Island Visitor’s Guide for our top recommendations of things to do, see, and experience, complete with custom itineraries and interactive maps!

2. Trying to See the Entire Island in One Day

Yes, Mackinac Island is only about four square miles, but it’s deceivingly big when you’re on foot or pedaling up a steep incline with a single-speed bike (more on that later).

If you’re just here for the day, pick a few must-see spots instead of cramming in everything. Otherwise, you’ll be exhausted before you even make it to Arch Rock.

3. Relying on Your Phone’s GPS

Mackinac Island’s streets can be a bit tricky, and your GPS? Well, let’s just say it doesn’t always cooperate. Cell service can be spotty, and maps don’t always show the best shortcuts or scenic trails.

Do yourself a favor—grab a physical map when you arrive. It’ll save you from wandering aimlessly through the woods like a lost pioneer.

4. Underestimating the Smell Factor

Horses are charming. The aroma that comes with them? Not so much. If you’re expecting nothing but crisp lake breezes, think again.

Mackinac Island relies on horses for transportation, and with that comes a natural fragrance you’ll notice pretty quickly.

Pro tip: Watch your step, especially in high-traffic areas.

But beyond the smell of horses, the lilacs are pleasingly potent in early June, and the scent of fresh fudge can be enjoyed throughout the downtown area.

5. Riding a Single-Speed Bike Into the Island’s Interior

The coastal route around the island? A smooth, beautiful, mostly flat eight-mile ride.

The interior? A different beast. If you rent a single-speed bike, prepare for an uphill battle that’ll have your thighs burning and your lungs questioning every decision you’ve ever made.

If you plan to explore the island’s hilly interior, go for a multi-speed bike – or bring a good sense of humor.

6. Buying the First Fudge You See

Mackinac Island is the fudge capital, and every other shop sells it. But not all fudge is created equal! Take your time, sample a few, and find your favorite before making a purchase.

And remember, once you start buying, it’s hard to stop. You’ll leave thinking one box is enough – until you see that “buy three, get one free” deal.

Tip: Don’t want to haul around fudge on the island? Stop in St. Ignace or Mackinaw City for the same sweet treats on the mainland.

7. Expecting a Cheap Meal

Mackinac Island is charming, historic, and, well… expensive.

While you can grab a casual bite at a few places, don’t expect fast-food prices. Everything has to be shipped in, and that cost gets passed along to you.

If you’re on a budget, pack some snacks or be strategic about where you eat (and avoid ordering a basic burger at a high-end restaurant – trust me, the island has better options!).

8. Thinking You Can Just “Pop Into” the Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel is an island icon, but unless you’re a registered guest or willing to pay an admission fee ($10/person), you can’t just waltz in and admire its grandeur.

That said, if you want a taste of the luxury, consider grabbing a drink at the Cupola Bar—no admission is required, and the views are unreal.

9. Assuming the Last Ferry Waits for You

It doesn’t. Mackinac Island is wonderful, but you probably don’t want to be stranded there overnight unless you’ve booked a hotel.

Pay attention to the ferry schedule, because when they say “last boat,” they mean it. If you miss it, congratulations – you just turned your day trip into an unexpected overnight adventure.

The Bottom Line

Mackinac Island is an incredible destination, but a little know-how goes a long way in making your trip even better. Avoid these common missteps, and you’ll be free to soak in the history, beauty, and yes – the fudge – without regrets.
