Port Huron Might Be Michigan’s Most Underrated Waterfront Town
Would you like to save this full guide?
Port Huron has a deep history as a waterfront town. It sits at the meeting point of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River. It’s home to Michigan’s oldest lighthouse, and that’s what brought us here the first time. What started as a quick day trip turned into something more once we learned about the Port Huron Museums and how much history and hands-on experiences you can experience throughout the city.

Fort Gratiot: Michigan’s Oldest Lighthouse
No visit to Port Huron feels complete without a stop at Fort Gratiot Lighthouse. As Michigan’s oldest lighthouse, it’s a must-visit if you are in the area. The lighthouse sits right near where Lake Huron meets the St. Clair River; the views alone are worth it, but if you have time, climbing the tower gives you a completely different perspective of the shoreline and passing freighters.
There is a small tour fee when climbing the tower and touring the grounds, but the kids and I have done it a few times now, and it’s always worth it for us!

Blue Water Bridge: International Bridge to Canada
The Blue Water Bridge is one of those landmarks you can’t miss, and it quickly becomes part of the experience of being in Port Huron. Stretching into Canada, it’s a constant backdrop along the waterfront, especially when you’re walking the Blue Water River Walk or spending time near the parks.
Bridge to Bay Trail: 50 Miles of Scenic Shoreline
If you’re looking to spend more time outside, the Bridge to Bay Trail is an easy way to explore beyond the immediate downtown area. This multi-use trail connects Port Huron to several nearby waterfront communities, making it perfect for a longer bike ride or a relaxed walk with water views along the way.
Lighthouse Beach: A Favorite Lake Huron Beach
Lighthouse Beach is one of our favorite Michigan beaches. The kids love the playground and watching the freighters. I love looking for Petoskey stones. Lakeside beach just down the road is another favorite of ours, with a splash pad, seasonal concessions, a playground, and more! Both of these beaches require parking passes seasonally from May to September, so keep that in mind for your visit.

Electric Coffee: A Former Gas Station Turned Coffeehouse
Just minutes from Lighthouse Beach is Electric Coffee. I first discovered this coffee shop while glancing over en route to the beach. Intrigued, I quickly looked up the spot on Google Maps. They’ve been roasting beans for years, but recently made a 1930s Shell Station their coffee shop. The vibes are impeccable, and the former gas station-turned-coffeehouse has so much personality and charm. You can either enjoy your drink there or take it with you on your adventures.

Huron Lightship Museum & More Port Huron Museums
Port Huron Museums ended up being one of those things we didn’t fully appreciate until we were there. I first discovered the Port Huron Museum system when I wanted to tour Michigan’s oldest lighthouse. The museum system actually includes five different sites across the city, from the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse to the Thomas Edison Depot and the Lightship Huron, so it’s more than just one stop.
We ended up getting a membership last summer because we loved being able to tour the lighthouse each time we headed to the beach, and it made it easy to explore the other sites at our own pace.

Discovery City Children’s Museum: Interactive Fun for Kids
Discovery City Children’s Museum is separate, but worth mentioning, especially if you’re visiting with kids. It’s a newer children’s museum in downtown Port Huron with hands-on, interactive exhibits designed for younger kids, and it adds a really fun, play-based stop to your day.

Storehouse: An Indoor Marketplace for Antique Treasures
Port Huron is home to different shops worth spending time checking out. Whether you are searching for a new record, candy to add to your stash, or antiques, Port Huron has something for you. On our most recent visit, we discovered Storehouse. This indoor vendor market is everything I am looking for when I am traveling and want to do a little shopping.
With so many different options of home decor, antiques, and unique gifts, I knew I had found a real gem. I went home with a print of a painting done by a Michigan artist named Emma Joy, and it was just the right souvenir for us. If you love supporting local and unique finds, this is the stop for you.

Casey’s: Come for the Lighthouse, Stay for This Lunch
There’s no shortage of great dining in Port Huron, which is why I encourage you to visit. If I were going to suggest a family-friendly place we keep coming back to, it is definitely Casey’s, where you will love the beach town vibes and variety of menu choices.

Raven Cafe: A Must-Visit for Literary Fans
Raven Cafe has been a staple of ours as well, with options for everyone and the unique decor in one of the oldest structures in Port Huron.

Oh, Splat!: A Messy & Exhilarating Paint Throwing Experience
On one of our most recent trips to Port Huron, we discovered Foundry. While Foundry offers an array of different hands-on art experiences, we had signed up for the Oh, Splat! experience. Given canvases, protective coverings, and, of course, paint, we were able to break loose and create some art in a new and unique way for us in their splatter paint room.

Palmer Park & More Amazing Playgrounds
One thing that surprised me the most about our visits to Port Huron is how many amazing playgrounds there are! We seem to discover a new one each visit (and of course return to our favorites like Palmer Park). If you are a family that loves burning energy on unique playground structures, then Port Huron deserves a place on your to-visit list.

We Keep Coming Back to Port Huron
Port Huron is one of those places that’s easy to return to. Between the water, the freighters, the small shops, and the mix of things to do, it never really feels like we’ve seen it all in one trip. We keep coming back, doing a version of the same day, and still finding something new each time. It’s simple, but it works, and sometimes that’s exactly what we are looking for.
