Fall isn’t just a season in Southwest Michigan. It’s a vibe. There’s an energy that arrives with the first flashes of color in September and sticks around long after the leaves are gone. Brilliant foliage in October gives way to twinkling lights, orchard trips turn into holiday traditions, and crisp November afternoons along Lake Michigan become bundled-up winter adventures in December.
Southwest Michigan packs a lot into one getaway. Lake Michigan sets the western edge, while vineyards, orchards, small towns, and rolling countryside stretch inland. You can climb a dune in the morning, wander through a vineyard in the afternoon, browse an arts district before dinner, and still make it to the lakeshore for sunset.
And when the calendar fills with festivals, markets, and seasonal traditions, there are even more reasons to make a full weekend of it.

5 Perfect-for-Fall Adventures in Southwest Michigan
1. Take a scenic fall color drive.
One of the easiest ways to experience fall in Southwest Michigan is simply to get in the car and go. The region’s Fall Color Guide makes the planning part easy, with six recommended routes winding along Lake Michigan, through tree-lined countryside, and past vineyards, orchards, and small towns. The hardest part might be deciding which route to take.
2. Experience a local orchard.
Fall tastes better straight from the orchard. At Jollay Orchards in Coloma, pick apples and grapes, grab a pumpkin, wander the corn maze, or take a hayride. Cider and donuts make a pretty convincing finale.
Stovers Farm Market in Berrien Springs offers another taste of harvest season. Pick apples, take a hayride, and stop for cider, caramel apples, coffee, and donuts. Then, shop the Big Red Barn farm store for local jams, jellies, treats, seasonal décor, and more. Come hungry.
3. Sip and hike between two vineyards.
Why choose between a fall hike and wine tasting when you can do both? The free Mt. Tabor Trails cover more than 3.5 miles through vineyards, fields, and woods. The trails connect Round Barn Winery & Estate with Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant, and you can start at either end. Grab a wine, beer, or cocktail to-go and sip along the way.
Both wineries are also part of Southwest Michigan’s Makers Trail, which connects more than 50 wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries across the region.
4. See fall colors with a soaring view.
Sometimes the best fall color is above eye level. Walk the treetop walkway at Sarett Nature Center for views across the autumn canopy, or head to Galien River County Park for its 300-foot canopy walkway.
For a fall view with a little sand in your shoes, head to Warren Dunes State Park. Climb the dunes for a panorama where autumn color meets the blue water of Lake Michigan.
5. Explore downtowns with distinct fall character.
Give your hiking shoes a break and spend a fall afternoon downtown. In the Benton Harbor Arts District, colorful murals, galleries, and creative spaces add another kind of color to the season. Stop for coffee or something sweet, then try your hand at making a glass pumpkin at Water Street Glassworks.
Just across the river, downtown St. Joseph pairs independent shops and restaurants with Lake Michigan views. Stroll beneath the changing trees at Lake Bluff Park, then stick around for a fall sunset overlooking the St. Joseph North Pier lighthouses.

Celebrate the start of fall along Lake Bluff Park with the St. Joe Farmers Market, family activities, storytime, and even a few farm animals from Critter Barn. Admission is free, and Lake Michigan provides the backdrop.
Four Flags Area Apple Festival | Niles
October 1–4, 2026
This four-day Niles tradition has celebrated the apple harvest since the 1970s. Expect carnival rides, games, food, parades, contests, live entertainment, and more than 100 arts and crafts booths over the weekend.
Under the Harvest Moon Festival | Dowagiac

Downtown Dowagiac goes full fall with handmade and artisan goods, Michigan-grown produce, antiques, and family activities. It runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Costumes are highly encouraged for this Halloween takeover of downtown St. Joseph. The free festivities include a costume parade, artisan market, pumpkin patch, hayrides, magic shows, and even spooky lighthouse tours.

Merry & Bright Weekend in St. Joseph | St. Joseph
December 4-6, 2026
Merry & Bright Weekend fills downtown St. Joseph with lights, shopping, Santa, and some traditions that are delightfully unique while rooted in tradition.
Light Up the Bluff: Lake Bluff Park flips the switch on roughly one million lights, turning the bluff above Lake Michigan into a walk-through holiday display. Better yet, the lights stick around well beyond the weekend, glowing throughout the winter season.
Reindog Parade: Yes, it’s exactly as fun as it sounds. On December 5, costumed dogs and their humans parade through downtown in their holiday best. Santa arrives as part of the festivities, too.
Holiday Artisan Market: Save some room on your shopping list for Sunday. The indoor market brings local artisans and handcrafted goods to Union + Social from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 6.
Santa’s House: Santa sets up shop at the corner of State and Pleasant streets for wish lists and holiday photos. He’ll be there during Merry & Bright Weekend and returns for additional dates through December 23.

Make picking out the tree part of the holiday getaway at Pinecrest Christmas Tree Farm in Galien. Choose and cut your own or pick a pre-cut tree, then browse the Christmas shop for ornaments, wreaths, decorations, and gifts.

Skip the same-old shopping list. Browse handmade glass or take a class to create your own glass ornament at Water Street Glassworks.
