As someone who’s always loved exploring Michigan, creating a “must-see” list has pushed me out of my comfort zone and led me to some of my favorite places in the state. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, these spots have shaped my understanding of Michigan’s beauty and diversity.
Everyone’s list will look different, but I encourage you to explore these seven destinations to see if they earn a place on yours.
The Ledges | Grand Ledge
The sandstone cliffs of The Ledges are unlike anything else in Michigan and are a must-see for outdoor enthusiasts. At Fitzgerald Park, you’ll find amenities like a playground, bathrooms, and well-maintained trails, making it great for families. For a more rustic experience, Oak Park offers stunning views and is the go-to spot for rock climbing.
These ancient sandstone formations, dating back over 300 million years, are a geological marvel. Walking along the trails, you can feel the deep connection to Michigan’s natural history.
Located just a short drive from Lansing, The Ledges are close enough to the state capitol to make your visit a well-rounded trip. Explore the beauty of these cliffs in the morning, and then spend the afternoon enjoying Lansing’s dining and attractions. It’s the perfect way to combine outdoor adventure with city exploration.
Fayette Historic State Park | Garden
Fayette Historic State Park is a captivating mix of history and natural beauty. The overlook trail is one of our favorite spots, providing a breathtaking view of the entire town and harbor.
After taking it all in from above, walking through the preserved buildings of this 19th-century iron smelting town offers a fascinating glimpse into Michigan’s industrial past.
This park is a great stop if you’re continuing north or west in the Upper Peninsula, and it’s worth every moment of exploration.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore | Munising
Pictured Rocks is one of Michigan’s most iconic destinations, and it’s easy to see why. I’ve explored it both by land and water, and each offers something unique. By land, you’ll find incredible hikes and overlooks, including my personal favorite: Log Slide. The waterfalls in the area are equally breathtaking.
Viewing Pictured Rocks by water is a must for its sheer cliffs and vibrant colors. It’s a completely different perspective and highlights the grandeur of this special place.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore | Empire
Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of Michigan’s crown jewels, and it never fails to amaze me. The hikes here are phenomenal—Pyramid Point and Empire Bluff are my personal favorites, offering stunning views of Lake Michigan.
Along the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, the Lake Michigan overlook at stop #9, is simply unmatched.
Whether you’re up for the famous dune climb or just want to take in the incredible views, this destination is a must-see for anyone exploring Michigan.
Dow Gardens and Whiting Forest Canopy Walk | Midland
This destination often flies under the radar, but it deserves a spot on every Michigan bucket list. The Whiting Forest Canopy Walk is the nation’s longest, and walking 40 feet above the forest floor is an incredible experience.
Dow Gardens is equally amazing, with programs like the butterfly exhibit and seasonal displays that make it a joy to visit year-round. It’s a peaceful yet dynamic space that has become one of our favorites.
Turnip Rock | Port Austin
Turnip Rock is a hidden gem that’s only accessible by water, but it’s well worth the adventure. Kayaking out to this unique rock formation gives you a sense of accomplishment and a chance to see the Thumb Coast’s beauty up close.
This destination has a special place in my heart because it led me to explore more of the Thumb area, where I fell in love with its rich history and stunning scenery. It’s a reminder of how one adventure can open the door to so many others.
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park | Ontonagon
The Porcupine Mountains, or “Porkies” as they’re affectionately known, are a treasure trove of natural beauty and adventure. Having visited in both the summer and fall, I’ve been able to experience this incredible park in two of its most beautiful seasons.
The Lake of the Clouds overlook is a must-see for every visitor. Standing there, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of the forest and shimmering waters below—it’s no wonder it’s one of Michigan’s most iconic sights.
Beyond the popular overlooks, one of my favorite trails in Michigan is the Union Mine Trail. This short but rewarding hike takes you along the Union River, offering a mix of serene woods and remnants of Michigan’s mining history. Interpretive signs along the trail detail the park’s copper mining heritage, giving you a glimpse into the lives of the miners who worked here in the 1800s. It’s the perfect blend of natural beauty and historical context, making it an unforgettable experience.
Whether you’re hiking, camping, or simply taking in the views, the Porkies offer something special for everyone.
Why I Love Being a Michigander
Growing up on Lake Michigan gave me an appreciation for its beauty, but making plans to explore the state has uncovered true gems I might never have discovered otherwise. From the sandstone cliffs of The Ledges to the vibrant shores of Pictured Rocks, Michigan continues to surprise and inspire me.
