Charming Communities on Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay

Harbor Springs

Recently named America’s Best Small Laketown by Travel + Leisure, Harbor Springs has it all. This waterfront community is located along Little Traverse Bay and is packed with activities, no matter the season. Harbor Springs combines the beauty of the shoreline with the solitude of the woods, creating a perfect place to stop and take a breath. 

An Outdoor Haven

If you are looking to enjoy the outdoors, Harbor Springs is the place for you! Here you’ll find:

Excited to explore the beautiful waters of Little Traverse Bay? Head to The Outfitter for seasonal kayak and paddleboard rentals. Or, take a tour on the fully-restored, historic Pointer Boat for a unique guided way to view the city from the water.

If you’re in the mood for a scenic drive, the Tunnel of Trees along M-119 is breathtaking and sure to inspire a sense of wonder.  Make sure to visit in the fall to drive underneath a canopy of colors!

Fresh Local Dining

Harbor Springs boasts a variety of culinary choices that incorporate fresh, local ingredients and homemade goodness. Located in a historic hotel overlooking Little Traverse Bay, The New York Restaurant serves fine-dining seasonal fare, such as fresh fish, shrimp pasta, and melt-in-your-mouth filet. 

Pond Hill Farm combines nature, fresh food, farm life, and entertainment all in one dog-friendly stop. Kids can romp around the farm while adults enjoy a beverage from their winery and brewery. Don’t miss their brick oven pizza or live music on the weekends. 

For dessert, Tom’s Mom’s Cookies has been serving up the area’s heftiest chocolate chunk cookies since 1985, all made from scratch.

There is always something happening in Harbor Springs, with events ranging from Blissfest Folk Music Festival, Fall Days at Pond Hill Farm, Ugotta Regatta, and the Festival of the Books!

  • Otis Harbor Springs: Just minutes from the iconic Tunnel of Trees, this newly renovated mid-century hotel features original artwork in each guest room.   • Young Americans Dinner Theatre: Take in a memorable dinner and a Broadway-style show at The Highlands. This iconic theatre show has been around every summer since 1978.

Petoskey

Petoskey is one of those towns that makes you feel like you took a step back in time – in the best possible way. It’s a beloved destination for a Northern Michigan getaway at all times of the year, as it invites you to unwind and truly relax. 

No wonder the famous writer Ernest Hemingway was so inspired by this area. Petoskey is pleasing not only to the eye but also to the soul.

Waterfront Adventures

The magic begins along Petoskey’s harbor, bustling with life at Bayfront Park and the Petoskey Breakwall Beacon. You could spend a whole afternoon looking for Petoskey Stones on the rocky shores here, letting kids play at the park, strolling out to the beacon, or reading a book by the quiet waves. 

If you want to explore further, take the Little Traverse Bay Ferry across the water to neighboring Harbor Springs or Bay Harbor. Be sure to end your day here by soaking in a million-dollar sunset at Sunset Park.

A Charming Downtown

When you’re ready to leave the beach, walk right over to the historic Gaslight District, home of many one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. The Gaslight District is a boutique shopping dream, with local art at Somebody’s Gallery, unique gifts at North Goods, and outdoor apparel at Bearcub Outfitters.  

In addition to meandering the shops, don’t forget to fill up at one of the delicious restaurants. The Back Lot provides a food truck and bar yard haven, with one-of-a-kind cocktails and food ranging from wood-fired pizza, handcrafted tacos, and craveable fish and chips. If you appreciate locally-made cuisine in a beautiful historic building, City Park Grill is a must.

Award-Winning Wineries & Breweries

Petoskey is perfect for beer and wine tasting, featuring the renowned Petoskey Wine Region and several fantastic breweries.

Locally owned and environmentally sustainable, the award-winning Walloon Lake Winery deserves a place on your list. The grounds are simply gorgeous, making it a must-stop for a flight of wine and a chance to catch your breath.

In addition to a delicious selection of wine, Mackinaw Trail Winery & Brewery boasts 14 beer taps. The family ties here run deep, and the personal connection they have to their craft is tangible.

For a memorable ale, stop in at Beards Brewery. They offer everything from hazy IPAs to German-style Dunkels to a unique twist on a Belgian Saison. Try classic pub fare with a spin, such as Japanese-style chicken strips or truffle fries. Make sure to check out their new Root Cellar, a community beer lounge that is made to connect with others.

Top Trails and Natural Areas

Petoskey is also home to some of the region’s top trails and natural areas. Petoskey State Park is arguably one of Michigan’s top state parks, with its lush shoreline and star-filled nights. The Bear River Valley Recreation Area is a local favorite, meandering along the rushing river, leading you into nature right in the heart of downtown. Petoskey is also a dedicated “trail town”, as it intersects with the North Country Trail.

  • North Perk Coffee: Made-to-order drinks and locally crafted ingredients make North Perk Coffee a standout. Stop here for a morning cup of Joe or an afternoon “Petoskey Fog Latte” and croissant.
  • Crooked Tree Arts Center: This well-loved art center has been around since 1971, offering a dance studio, four galleries, a theatre, and a culinary kitchen. There is always something to see or do here, whether it’s a new art installation or a community art class.

Bay Harbor

Bay Harbor combines the charm of the shoreline with distinctive luxury. It’s a community built to not only feel luxe but also to feel like home. Situated between Charlevoix and Petoskey, Bay Harbor makes a perfect destination for a day of exploring. 

Each year, Bay Harbor hosts the Balloons Over Bay Harbor extravaganza in September. Hot air balloons adorn the autumn sky, making it a sight to remember.

The Village at Bay Harbor sits right along the waterfront, offering special dining options and shops made for meandering. Known as a community that appreciates the finer things in life, as well as a top wedding destination, the beauty found here is made for dreaming. 

As you stroll the streets downtown, you’ll notice the thoughtful shops that make you feel at home – a grab-and-go market at Salvatore’s, clothing and handmade jewelry at Sadie Rose Boutique, and sweet treats at Candy Harbor.

First-Class Dining & Drinks

Brunch is the specialty at Maple + Batter, and they truly excel at it. With delightful options such as a breakfast charcuterie board, truffle avocado toast, and sweet potato maple hash, you’ll want to keep coming back to try all the items on the menu.

Make sure to stop into Mammoth Distilling for a unique cocktail, all made with local ingredients, or if you’re in the mood for a carefully curated glass of wine, head over to SIP wine bar. Enjoy a drink outside at the lakeside bar at Brandy’s Harbortown as you take in the sights of the bay.

For dinner, don’t miss NOMAD, a highly acclaimed restaurant with a menu that changes often and is meant for sharing plates.

  • Inn at Bay Harbor: This boutique hotel on Lake Michigan offers luxe accommodations, stunning grounds, and dining at Vintage: Chophouse | Wine Bar or The Sagamore Room for breakfast. The Inn is known for its afternoon tea, state-of-the-art spa, and outdoor pool and hot tub (open year-round). It’s the perfect place to catch a sunset over a glass of wine. 
  • Bay Harbor Golf Club: Three specially designed golf courses run alongside Lake Michigan with stunning views and top-of-the-line services. The Links Grille serves up lunch, dinner, and drinks to enjoy as you finish your round.

Bay View

Bay View sits in the heart of Petoskey, nestled into the hillside above Lake Michigan. It’s a seasonal community, handcrafted by history and known for its Victorian homes. This quiet community has earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a haven for history buffs!

A Historical Haven

Although it’s considered a private community, they welcome visitors to appreciate its  Victorian architecture. I’ve driven through the neighborhoods in late spring, my imagination running wild with the stories these houses must hold. 

In addition to taking a drive through the neighborhood, make sure to stop at the trails found at Bay View Woods

The community also has several well-known events, such as the Monday Night Film Festival, the Bay View Music Festival, and Bay View’s Big Read. You can also purchase tickets for several concerts featured here through the summer!

Historic Inns & Fine Dining

Also found in this community is the historic Stafford’s Bay View Inn, offering charming accommodations. Savor a delicious brunch at the Roselawn Dining Room or enjoy fine dining at the Terrace Inn‘s 1911 Restaurant.

Welcoming Vibes on Inland Waterways

Alanson

A quaint village just 20 minutes from Petoskey, Alanson is situated on the picturesque banks of the Crooked River. This community is known for its boating and fishing life, as well as seasonal opportunities to enjoy ORV trails and snowmobile.

Scenic Waterways

Not only is Lake Michigan close by, but this community is dotted with inland lakes, making it a wonderful place to rent a cabin and enjoy lake life. The Crooked River Lodge is a prominent resource, offering lodging and meeting rooms for those seeking a business location off the beaten path. 

The area also boasts hidden gem nature trails. Oden Island Nature Preserve offers a one-mile trail on Crooked Lake, where you will find fragile wetlands and countless old-growth trees as you traverse the land. The scenic ¼ mile Inland Waterway Nature Trail is a beautiful way to immerse yourself in the natural world. 

The Village of Alanson is, without a doubt, connected to the water.

A Quaint Village 

After you are done exploring the natural world, make sure to wander the village, stopping at the Sweet and Savory Pie Company for a slice of homemade pie and perusing antiques at Happymess.

  • Crooked Vine Vineyard & Winery: Stop by to enjoy award-winning wines set among green farmlands and beautiful views. Wines range from dry to sweet, with cider on tap and five varieties of grapes to explore. 
  • Oden Fish Hatchery Visitors Center: Open with no charge to the public, come learn about the fish that live right here in our lakes. The visitor center has interpretive trails, an underwater viewing chamber, guided tours, and bird-watching activities.

Boyne City/Boyne Falls

Boyne City and Boyne Falls are stand-out communities known for the lake and resort lifestyle. Only a few minutes apart, each offers its own twist to the Northern Michigan name. 

On the Shores of Lake Charlevoix

Boyne City shares a shoreline along Lake Charlevoix, which is undoubtedly one of the best lakes in the US. You could spend an entire day boating through the channels of Lake Charlevoix, marveling at the homes built upon its shore. The downtown village spans all interests, specializing in local art, upscale resale shops, and unique gifts. 

Just outside of Boyne City is the largest lavender farm in Michigan, Lavender Hill Farm. It is definitely worth a stop, if only to smell the delicious scent of the flowers during their bloom in summer. They also have a killer music lineup, farm tours, and unique dining experiences. Provisions Lounge is also a recommended stop for craft beers and classic cocktails.

A World-Class Resort 

Boyne Falls is just a few minutes east of Boyne City, close to the Boyne River. It gets most of its acclaim from Boyne Mountain Resort, known for its top-of-the-line skiing and golf courses. There is plenty to see at Boyne Mountain Resort, including SkyBridge Michigan, the World’s Longest Timber-Towered Suspension Bridge, and Avalanche Bay, Michigan’s largest indoor water park built for families.

Also in the area is the beautiful Young State Park, a great spot to launch your boat, have a beach day, hike miles of trails,  and is conveniently located near Boyne City and Boyne Falls.

  • Muskrat Distilling: A Boyne City exclusive set in a restored 1890s building, this distillery serves pre-Prohibition-style cocktails made from local ingredients and has live music on Friday nights. 
  • Café Sante: This casual European bistro serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Start the day with Vienna pancakes or a mushroom tartine, or stop for a wood-fired pizza at lunch. Dinner offerings include European classics like beef bourguignon and chicken fricasse, guaranteed to end your day with a satisfied belly.
