Best Donuts in West Michigan

Sweetwater’s Donut Mill – Kalamazoo & Battle Creek Michigan

If you’re from Southwest Michigan, chances are,  Sweetwater’s is your idea of the perfect donut. With locations in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, you never have to be too far away from a donut. Sweetwater’s has been around since 1983.

In that time, they’ve honed their donut-making abilities to perfection. All of their standard donuts are excellent, but they can get pretty wild too. Recently they made headlines for their Oberon Donut to go along with one of Michigan’s favorite craft beers.

The best part of Sweetwater’s? They’re open 24/7, so you can grab a donut literally whenever you want.

Donuts on the beach? You might pause at the idea, but a true donut lover knows that there is no bad place or time for a donut. Goobers Bakery in Norton Shores is just a stone’s throw away from Lake Michigan. Their selection is just as great as the lake they’re located on.

Goobers has a solid variety of base donuts, but what really makes it special is the huge number of drizzles, toppings, and glazes you can get.

Who doesn’t want a chocolate cake donut with double chocolate toppings AND sprinkles? That’s the way to our hearts, and Goobers surely has something that will speak to yours as well.

Grand Finale Desserts & Pastries – Grand Haven

Grand Haven calls to us in this next entry with Grand Finale Desserts & Pastries serving as the destination. On top of donuts, Grand Finale also has a ton of other options for your friends who might not like donuts (as crazy as that is).

There are nine varieties of scones for a taste from across the pond. You can also dig into any number of turnovers if you’re looking for something super savory. Plus, they do wedding cakes! Personally, we like the idea of a mountain of wedding donuts, but that might just be us.

Delicious Southeast Michigan Donuts

Gluten Free Specialties LLC – Rochester Hills

Everyone should be able to enjoy a donut. For those with Celiac disease, it can be a bit harder to do. That’s a damn shame, so Gluten Free Specialties LLC has you covered.

The gluten-free bakery in Rochester Hills has a ton of different concoctions for you, including a few different varieties of donuts! The coconut donuts sound especially good, but they have a good mix of flavors to satisfy you no matter what your palette may be.

Petey’s Donuts – Brooklyn

We couldn’t make it through this entire list without including a food truck, could we? Enter Petey’s Donuts. This super cool red truck contains just one kind of donut: Apple cider. You don’t need variety when you’ve mastered your craft though, as these donuts are seriously delicious.

Plus at a dollar a donut or a baker’s dozen for $10, you can’t beat that kind of economic sense for something so delicious. Plus, you can enjoy your treat outside during the lovely Michigan summer.

Dilla’s Delights – Detroit

Here’s one Detroit legend named after another. This donut shop is run by Herman Hayes. You might have heard of his nephew, J Dilla, who was both an acclaimed rapper and producer before his death in 2006 and the namesake Dilla’s Delights.

This donut shop focuses on organic, so you don’t have to feel bad about taking out a dozen donuts by yourself. Highlights include a broccoli and cheese donut for those who need some greens.

They have donuts with key lime glaze if you’re craving that delicious key lime pie flavor in a more compact form.

Special Ed’s Donuts – Somerset Center

We love restaurants that have unusual or unique decor or structures. Special Ed’s Donuts in Somerset Center fits the bill, as it isn’t in a building at all. Running out of a repurposed school bus, Special Ed’s is a one-of-a-kind donut establishment.

Obviously, the bus is only open during the spring and summer, so now is the chance to try one of their tasty donuts!

Drool-Worthy Donuts in Northern Michigan

Potters Bakery – Traverse City

It’s not only Southern Michigan that deserves donut love. Moving north, we have Potters Bakery in beautiful Traverse City. Located centrally on E. Eighth Street, it’s a must for anyone passing through or visiting for the summer.

In the donut department, Potters has both cake donuts along with yeast-raised varieties, both of which will have you drooling. And because it’s Traverse City, cherry is one of the many flavors you can grab.

Personally, sign me up for the ‘peanut butter iced fried cinnamon.’ Those are words of deliciousness.

Delectable Mid-Michigan Donuts

Glazed And Confused – East Lansing

Run by a career firefighter, Glazed and Confused Bakery is a local favorite in East Lansing. With a name that’s a twist of the cult classic film Dazed and Confused, you know you’re in for a great time when you come here.

Highlights here include a maple bacon donut (because bacon makes everything better), an espresso-glazed donut christened “Java The Hut,” and a creme brulee-based donut.

Those combined with classic standbys make this the place to visit if you’re in need of a donut around our state’s Capital.

Hamilton Home Bakery – Saginaw

Editor’s Note: Goobers closed in December 2021.

If you need something baked with love while you’re in Saginaw, you can stop by Hamilton Home Bakery. At Hamilton, you’re guaranteed to get a smile along with your order.

Murphy’s Bakery – Bad Axe

We can’t complete the list without going into the Thumb, so now we have Murphy’s Bakery in Bad Axe. They’ve got a whole bunch of bread and pastries to choose from, but the main attraction is the donuts.

No matter your taste, they have something that will satisfy you! The filled donuts here are especially amazing, so plan your consumption accordingly. They open at 4 am, so if you’re an early riser you can still get your donut fix.

Upper Peninsula Donuts to Die For

Huron Mountain Bakery – Ishpeming & Marquette

We have to show the Upper Peninsula some love as well! With locations in both Marquette and Ishpeming, Huron Mountain Bakery has a hold on the UP donut love.

On top of donuts, you can also get a huge variety of sandwiches on some handmade bread, or just get the bread yourself to take home with you. The Ishpeming location also has pizza, because they are committed to bringing us universally beloved foods in the best possible form.

Pizza for a meal and then donuts for dessert? That’s the way to live right there.
