Hiking Trails & Topography

Trail Features
- Length: The trail extends for 1.5 miles, making it an ideal length for a short, refreshing hike that can be completed in about an hour or less, depending on your pace.
- Terrain: The preserve’s terrain begins flat on the western side and gradually transitions to rolling ridges to the east. This variation provides a gentle challenge and introduces hikers to the diverse topography of the area.
- Vegetation: Hikers will walk through a forest dominated by large red oaks, alongside the classic maple and beech trees that typify the northern upland forests of northwestern Emmet County. This canopy offers shade and creates a serene atmosphere for hikers.

How to Get to the Hoogland Family Nature Preserve
The preserve is located at 4135 S Lake Shore Drive, Harbor Springs, MI 49740. Visitors can access it by driving north on M-119 from Harbor Springs.
- Start from Harbor Springs: Begin your journey in Harbor Springs, a charming resort community located along the shores of Lake Michigan.
- Head North on M-119: From Harbor Springs, take M-119 north. This scenic route, also known as the Tunnel of Trees, offers a picturesque drive with lush forests on either side.
- Drive 7.7 Miles: Continue on M-119 for approximately 7.7 miles. This stretch of road will take you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in northern Michigan.
- Approach Wasson’s Grade: As you near the end of the 7.7-mile stretch, you will start descending a significant hill known as Wasson’s Grade. This area is a notable landmark on your way to the preserve.
- Turn at the Sharp Corner: At the base of Wasson’s Grade, be prepared to make a fairly sharp right-hand turn. This corner is a key indicator that you are close to your destination.
- Look for the Parking Area: Shortly after making the turn, watch for the parking area on the right side of the road. This is where you will park to access the Hoogland Family Nature Preserve.
