Mackinac Island Ferry Companies

If you’re planning to visit the island, taking a ferry is one of the three main forms of transportation to get there, and it’s the more affordable option by far (the other ways include hiring a private plane or private boat).

Fortunately, multiple passenger options are available to choose from, and each has docks in St Ignace (on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) and Mackinaw City (on the Lower Peninsula), with short-term and long-term parking available.

Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry

Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry is a family-owned ferry service that has been providing transportation to and from Mackinac Island, Michigan, for over 75 years.

In 1945, Captain William H. Shepler, a native of Mackinac Island, returned to Michigan after serving in World War II. Recognizing the potential for improved ferry service, he began offering charter services with a small cabin cruiser named “Miss Margy,” after his wife, Margaret.

Over the years, the fleet expanded, and the company established a reputation for high-class, efficient ferry service. Today, under the leadership of the third generation of the Shepler family, the company continues to uphold its commitment to first-class service.

In early 2022, Shepler’s was acquired by the Hoffmann Family of Companies.

The company operates from docks in both Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, offering passengers a quick 16-minute ride to the island on fast, clean, and comfortable boats.

Arnold Transit Co.

Arnold Transit Company, established in 1878 by George Arnold, has been a prominent ferry service provider to Mackinac Island, Michigan, for over 140 years.

The company played a significant role in transporting passengers and goods across the Straits of Mackinac, initially using coal-fired steamboats and later modernizing its fleet with diesel-powered vessels.

In 2016, Arnold Transit faced financial challenges, leading to the sale of its assets to Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry. Star Line continued operations under its own branding until 2022, when it rebranded as Mackinac Island Ferry Company.

In September 2024, the Hoffmann Family of Companies acquired Mackinac Island Ferry Company and revived the historic Arnold Transit Company name. This rebranding aims to honor the company’s rich legacy while continuing to provide reliable ferry services between Mackinac Island, St. Ignace, and Mackinaw City.

Additionally, Arnold Freight Company, a division of Arnold Transit, continues to offer freight services to Mackinac Island, maintaining a tradition of excellence in cargo transportation across the Straits of Mackinac.

What to Expect on a Mackinac Island Ferry Ride

Before boarding, it’s good to know what to expect during the trip. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • The ride takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes each way.
  • The boat may be crowded during peak season, so arrive early at the ferry dock to secure a spot on your preferred boat. You may have to wait for the next boat if the line is too long.
  • Restrooms are available onboard.
  • You’ll have the choice to sit on top (being exposed to the weather but enjoying amazing views) or below deck (less weather exposure but hampered views), so arrive early if you want your choice of seating.
  • The ferry may experience choppy waters, especially if crossing through the wake of freight ships moving through the Straits of Mackinac, so those prone to motion sickness should take precautions.
