A History of Hospitality

Schuler’s in Marshall is a storied restaurant with a rich history that spans over a century. The restaurant was initially established by Albert Schuler Sr. in 1909, originally starting as a cigar shop before expanding into a bakery and lunch counter.

The business evolved over the years, with significant contributions from subsequent generations of the Schuler family.

After returning from World War II, Win Schuler, Albert’s son, took over the business. He transformed it significantly, expanding the restaurant’s capacity significantly in response to a strike by the pin boys at the restaurant’s bowling alley.

Win’s charismatic personality and savvy promotional skills helped turn the restaurant into a popular destination, renowned for its warm memories, delicious food, and superior service.

“Schuler’s has been the #1 must experience restaurant in Marshall for over 100 years! In 2024 it doesn’t disappoint. The service and atmosphere are amazing. My BBQ brisket sandwich was juicy, tender, and filled with well balanced flavors.”

The kids got chicken strips and french fries. My wife ordered the chicken quesadilla and house salad. I got the classic Schuler’s prime rib with a salad, potatoes, and green beans! 😋 😋😋. Highly recommend 💚 💯💯”

Nostalgia on the Menu

Growing up on the north side of Battle Creek, Schuler’s was a well-known “special occasion” restaurant nearby in Marshall – one that my parents ate at for company dinners or anniversaries. As such it was held in high esteem in my limited knowledge of places to dine.

I remember getting to eat there once in high school – it was my 16th birthday, and my parents took me out to a “fancy restaurant” of my choice, and I chose Schuler’s. After all, in my mind, it was the fanciest restaurant around!

Now that I’m “all grown up,” I realize that it wasn’t so much a “fancy” restaurant as much as my parents reserved it for themselves – a place to enjoy without the kids. And if I still lived nearby, I’d probably find myself soaking up the atmosphere with my husband (sans our kids, of course) every month or so.

And of course, I pick up a pack of garlic bar chips and a tub of cheddar cheese spread whenever I see it at the grocery store – Win Schuler’s is a taste of home, especially during the holidays!

“A beautiful restaurant. The food was impeccable, and the atmosphere was calm, quiet, and inviting. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the Brisket & mac-n-cheese….wonderful! And my friend ordered the Turkey pot pie and that was delicious! I highly recommend this for your next date night out!”
