I’m afraid to admit that it’s been awhile since I was last at the MSU Dairy Store, too long, in fact.
As I stepped into the store, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad. This wasn’t because the MSU Dairy Store had somehow changed for the worse, but because it was even better than I remembered.
The place was still packed! I counted 29 people on a Tuesday just after noon, and in the middle of summer. There were students, families, people getting a quick fix on their lunch from work (like me) and more than a few kids – their faces smeared with chocolate and orange sherbert and blue moon – smiling ear to ear. I went for Dantonio’s Double Fudge Fake. It was delicious.
In honor of Spartan football Coach Mark Dantonio and the famous overtime fake field goal against Notre Dame, the Double Fudge Fake captures the excellence of the MSU football team by tying together some of the best flavors. It includes chocolate fudge ice cream with caramel ribbon, milk chocolate caramel filled footballs and chewy brownies.
The MSU Dairy Store has all of the usual flavors you’d expect, as well as a flavor for each of the schools in the Big Ten – yes, even one for their friends (or enemies?) down in Ann Arbor.
The MSU Dairy Store also has a couple coffee drinks, fresh homemade soups and grilled cheese sandwiches available should the mood strike.
The cheese is made right in Anthony Hall along with the ice cream, and there were some farm fresh eggs in the cooler as well.
There are regular tours through the facilities where you can see how these dairy food are made, from raw materials to finished cheese and ice cream. You can even get chocolate cheese!
