What Exactly is a Cat Cafe?
A cat café is the perfect blend of cozy and cuddly! Enjoy a warm coffee while spending time with friendly felines in a separate lounging area. Many cat cafés also offer adoption opportunities.
The setup of a cat cafe is simple: It’s a cafe where the main attraction is cats and not just coffee. In most cases, customers pay a small cover fee to spend time (generally an hour) interacting with cats. Typically, cafes have separate areas for their cafes and cat interaction rooms.
Legend has it that the world’s first cat cafe briefly operated in Austria from 1912-14. The concept became a global phenomenon when a cat cafe, known as the Cat Flower Garden, became a must-see destination when it opened in Taiwan in 1998.
Cat cafes were then enthusiastically embraced in Japan during the mid-2000s, in part because a great number of residents live in housing that doesn’t allow pets. Today, more than 150 cat cafes can be found in Japan.
Cat cafes can now be found all over the world including the Netherlands, Russia, Austria, Sweden, India England (where visitors can have high tea with cats), and Canada, which has a Siberian cat cafe.
Since the concept of a cat cafe became a global phenomenon, other animal cafes have opened around the world. Animal enthusiasts can find dog cafes as well as raccoon cafes, sheep cafes, hedgehog cafes, bird cafes, reptile cafes, and rabbit cafes.

How Does a Cat Cafe Work?
Before visiting a cat cafe, it’s important to know that there are several types of different cafes depending on the types of cats that are there.
- The most common cafes are ones where cats have been rescued and are permanent residents of the cafe.
- Cafes with rescued cats available for adoption typically partner with local shelters and rescue organizations to help cats socialize and prepare them to go to “forever homes.”
- Posh cat cafes feature purebred cats like Persians, Bengals, sphinxs, and other species. Some cafes feature a combination of purebred cats and rescues too.
It’s important when visiting a cat cafe to follow any/all rules. Cafes don’t allow cats in the cafe section of their establishments, so it’s important to make sure they don’t slip into areas where they’re not allowed.
Some cafés require reservations, allowing guests to stay for the length of their appointment. Most commonly, visitors enjoy hour-long time slots.
Visitors are also encouraged to be quiet in the cat room because loud noises may disturb cats. Cafes generally allow visitors to pick up cats that want to be picked up and visitors are also advised to leave sleeping or hiding cats alone.
Under the right circumstances, cats can be very social so visitors should relax, enjoy themselves, and socialize with the cats that may come up to them.
While there are no strict dress codes, many cafés require shoes to be removed before entering the cat lounge. Wearing long pants is a good idea to protect against playful scratches.
