Ben Wittbrodt is a special kind of magician. He has taken his Masters in Material Science and Engineering and combined it with his creative side to produce 3D printed iPhone cases of Michigan. I personally believe that the best things are discovered on accident, like chocolate chip cookies. WittPrint 3D started with a Masters research project and has blossomed into a beautiful, popular product.
Wittbrodt initially wrote a research paper that demonstrated the economic benefit of 3D printers. One thing that Wittbrodt’s research group experimented on with the 3D printers was an iPhone case. For fun, Wittbrodt printed one of the cases with the Upper Peninsula’s outline on it and posted it to Facebook. People started commenting on the photo, wondering where they could get one for themselves. After that, Wittbrodt started looking into other designs and the potential for growth with these 3D printed cases.
Currently on WittPrint 3D’s website, there are three Michigan designs available for the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, and 5S. There is the traditional block Michigan design, a design that shows the outline of the Great Lakes, and one of just the Upper Peninsula by itself. All three of these designs are available in black, blue, or white. There is also the opportunity to request a custom-made case, which are available starting at $30.
Currently, the cases are available online and at Copper World in Calumet. Additionally, High Five Threads in Traverse City has just started selling the iPhone cases after recently discovering how awesome they are. Wittbrodt and the gentlemen of High Five Threads are currently collaborating to create some custom-made cases exclusively for High Five Threads. Wittbrodt also designed a pink breast cancer awareness iPhone case for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and raised $250.
The future for WittPrint 3D is full of potential and opportunity. Wittbrodt wants to offer cases for the iPhone 5C and the Samsung Galaxy S4. Wittbrodt currently uses a two color printer for his designs, and looks to have full color capabilities in the future. With these options in the mind for future phone cases, Wittbrodt is excited to create even more custom-made cases for customers.
If you haven’t already, be sure to like WittPrint 3D on Facebook to stay updated with new designs and to watch for releases of new cases.
