The humble waffle isn’t always thought of as a high quality breakfast food. Often times, we’re simply grabbing the pre-cooked variety out of a box and shoving them in the toaster. If we’re really lucky, we prepare our own from pre-made batter in the lobby of a mediocre hotel.
However, some West Michigan breakfast spots have really stepped up their waffle game. Here are four great ones to get you started. These will likely leave you wondering why waffles have played such a limited role in your life up to this point.
4. Emma Lynn’s Chicken and Waffles: Double Trouble
If you’re going to visit a place called Emma Lynn’s Chicken and Waffles, it only makes sense to give the chicken and waffles their day in court. This soul food staple delivers a wonderful blend of sweet and savory to your taste buds. The portions not only leave you satisfied, but may have you questioning whether or not you’re going to need lunch that day. This is especially true if you opt for the Double Trouble!
Located in a small strip mall on 76th Street in Byron Center, Emma Lynn’s isn’t a large or fancy place. What it lacks in flash, however, it makes up for in flavor. The waffles come out of the iron soft with a subtle crisp on the outside. The chicken is not only juicy, but seasoned perfectly. Add a bowl of their grilled, seasoned potatoes to your order to complete the breakfast. This breakfast has, according to them, “the taste that makes you want to slap somebody next [to] you.”
Whether you’re a chicken and waffles rookie or put this meal option in the category of comfort food, Emma Lynn’s is the go-to spot in this part of the Mitten. We don’t recommend actually slapping anybody, though, no matter how good it is.
3. Wolfgang’s Restaurant: Strawberries, Bananas & Whipped Cream Belgian Waffle
Proudly proclaiming itself as “Home of the Best Breakfast in Grand Rapids,” Wolfgang’s Restaurant has created quite a reputation for itself. Because of that, come prepared to wait a little bit for a table. (But then be extremely glad that you did.)
Even with a more traditional waffle choice, Wolfgang’s delivers on both presentation and flavor. The fresh fruit and whipped cream make for a delightfully sweet party in your mouth. Note: the half order is probably plenty to sate most morning appetites. Strawberries and bananas are listed as separate topping options on the menu, but you can opt to include both on your waffles.(This is something that you should totally do.)
If you’re looking for something not quite as sweet, the Pecan Belgian Waffle does not disappoint, either.
2. Real Food Cafe: Wafflewich
Some of you who may be looking to indulge in a little waffle madness but have a hard time deviating from some of the heartier breakfast food options like eggs and bacon. No fear, Real Food Cafe in Grand Rapids has you covered.
Let me introduce the Wafflewich. As you may have guessed, it is precisely what it sounds like. It’s a generous helping of scrambled eggs, cheese and bacon, shoved between two Belgian waffle halves. The bacon is thick and flavorful. These eggs are dense and smothered in cheddar. Most importantly, the waffles are sprinkled in powdered sugar. All of this gives this take on a breakfast sandwich a special home in your heart.
It is a bit deceiving, however, as the Wafflewich seems to pack quite a bit of food into a relatively small package. Come hungry for this one, folks.
1. The Biscuit: Nutella Waffle
The best thing about Nutella is all of it. It’s pretty much just sugar, which is probably why it tastes so good. That also explains why the world has been using it to improve everything from peanut butter sandwiches to coffee over the years. It only makes sense that it finds its way to the waffle. At The Biscuit in Holland, they do it with extraordinary beauty.
The Nutella Waffle doesn’t just boast Nutella, however. There are also fresh strawberries, sliced almonds, as well as a house-made strawberry sauce drizzled over all of it. It looks like a masterpiece, and tastes like one, too. It’s the kind of breakfast we should all be starting out everyday with.
This is but a small sampling from here in West Michigan. Where is your favorite spot to enjoy the glorious waffle?
