An “everything old is new again” renaissance is taking place in Grand Rapids, and Downtown Market’s Vintage Street Market is at the heart of it.
Beginning this May, Grand Rapids’ own beloved indoor culinary market has opened its doors, literally, to a new venture: the Vintage Street Market. Located in their market stall center, they welcome more than 60 vendors each second Sunday of the month from May to September to sell their wares. The goodies range from small antique rings to large, one of a kind dining room tables and everything in between.
With the booming vintage industry that Grand Rapids offers, it’s no wonder that Special Events Manager of Downtown Market Claire Duthler wanted to tap into the scene. She recognized that antiques were a big draw in Grand Rapids and decided to create a unique event to cater to them. With vendors mostly from the Greater Grand Rapids area, she plans to expand her list to include Midwest venders next year.
The most exciting part about the vintage market, she says, is that is has created an increase in business at all the Downtown Market vendors. “We have shop owners saying they had customers that came in for the first time on those Sundays,” Duthler exclaimed excitedly.
Vintage Street Market can meet just about anyone’s shopping needs, as they are well stocked in gorgeous statement jewelry, unique glass and kitchen ware, and fun home decor. Each vendor is equally friendly and eager to help, or sit and chat with shoppers about their interesting finds.
Although the market offers a great variety of clothes, jewelry, and home goods, Duthler believes that items that sell the quickest are those that are repurposed.
The final Vintage Street Market of the season will be September 14th, with information on next year’s schedule around the holidays. Bring your cash and clear your car trunks, because you will not go home empty handed! What will you find?
