Northern Michigan’s running scene is about to get rowdy with the Traverse City Glow Run. This 5K race is perfect for any level of athletic ability, especially those who are new to the sport of running. It is indeed a “fun run,” with an emphasis on enjoyment and going at your own pace. In fact, it is not even timed, allowing participants to enjoy the experience instead of rushing through it.
The Traverse City Glow Run will take place at Hickory Hills on September 27th, 2014. The 5K itself will start at 7:15PM, however, many festivities get started at 4:00PM. It is an all-encompassing event that just happens to include running. There will be a one-mile fun run along with a 5K for those looking to challenge themselves further. The run itself is full of music, dancing, and giggles. Everyone is invited to arrive early for a special warm-up before the run. The warm-up consists of busting out your best dance moves and warming your insides with a good belly-laugh. Additionally, supplies for shirt decorating are provided for participants who want to arrive early and get creative.
The course itself is lined with strobe lights, “glow zones,” black lights, LED’s, and smoke machines. Clearly, it is advised that participants wear bright colors. The race starts and ends in front of the lodge at Hickory Hills. The 5K takes runners through the woods and into meadows that are packed with music, festive lights, and a “fog forest.”
After the race, light refreshments will be provided. Runners are encouraged to stick around, dance, and enjoy live music. The entertainment lasts until 9:30PM and is entirely family friendly.
If you sign up before August ends, the price of the 5K is $40 and the one-mile run is $18. The ticket price includes a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt and GlowPack. This kit is stuffed with glow-in-the-dark necklaces and bracelets. Additionally, a portion of the sales will be donated to Hickory Hills. Tickets can be purchased at TCGlowRun.com or MyNorthTickets.com.
If you want to be involved but are not overly enthusiastic about running, volunteers are needed for this event! Volunteer responsibilities may include: helping runners decorate t-shirts, handing out the packets at packet pick-up, directing runners on the course, handing out water at the aid stations, and passing out snacks and beverages at the finish line. For more information about volunteering, email Troy Daily at Troy@DailyMedias.com.
More than anything, this event will be a family friendly party, with a touch of exercise thrown in. Take a peek at the TC Glow Run’s website for additional information. I certainly hope to see many of you out there!
