For Michigan folk, Fall really isn’t a season, it’s a lifestyle. Food, flannel and foliage are all in full form right now, but if there’s one thing that we cherish most in the Mitten State, it’s beer. The annual Detroit Fall Beer Festival is taking place next weekend, thanks to the Michigan Brewers Guild and there’s no better place to praise our craft than Detroit’s historic Eastern Market. Below is the Awesome Mitten’s survival guide to make sure you can get out alive and if for some odd ball reason you haven’t grabbed your ticket yet, grab em while there hot!
1. Fuel up
Every veteran knows you can’t go into battle on an empty stomach, so it’s wise to grab a hearty meal ahead of time. Before you head inside the festival grounds, make sure to grab a bite to eat at one of Eastern Markets gems. You can grab a quick slice from Supino’s or stop by Bert’s and mow down on some of Detroit’s finest BBQ. Don’t worry though, vendors inside include Grand Trunk Pub, Slows Bar BQ and Detroit Beer Co.for those drunk munchies, that will surly creep up on you half way through the day.
2. Pace yourself
With over 600 Michigan beers in attendance, it’s wise to take your time. Most of the beers were brewed specialty for this event, with many of them being high in alcohol, so make sure to pay attention to those ABV’s. Sure, double IPA’s and bourbon barrel aged brews will be a plenty, but that doesn’t mean you need to try everyone of them in the two hour.
3. Dress for the occasion
With Fall in full gear, make sure that you’re dressed for a long day of drinking. Depending on what mother nature decides to throw at us, have an extra hat or pair of gloves on hand, just in case she’s feeling frisky. Also, pretzel and hop necklaces are highly encouraged, these will be prime for mid-line snacks and selfies.
4. Step outside your comfort zone
This is the chance to try every crazy concocted type of beer in the game, so take a chance with something new and interesting. With obscure styles like cucumber basil saison, dark peanut butter ale and a double IPA brewed with raisins, why not dive into the deep end for a change of pace and give those taste buds of yours a wicked ride they won’t forget.
5. Designate a driver
This ones a no brainer, don’t drink and drive, and if there’s one thing on this list to follow, its this. Every dude and dudette abides, so make sure to have all your ducks in a row before the festivities take place. If you live in the metro area, utilize services like Uber, to make your voyage home easy and if you’re coming from outta town, shack up in one of Detroit’s fine hotels for the evening.
