Those that have visited the quaint town of Frankfort know that it is nearly perfect. The one thing it seemed to be missing, however, was a brewery of their own craft beer. Well fear not, Frankfort fans, now you can enjoy the perfect beach and beautiful lighthouse with your hand clutched around the handle of a growler from Frankfort’s own brewery, Stormcloud Brewing Company.

Co-owners Brian Confer and Rick Schmitt, along with non-managing partner, Jim Kunz, built Stormcloud Brewing Company just two blocks from Lake Michigan and Frankfort’s famous pier and beach. Because of their close proximity to a beach that does not allow glass containers of any sort, Stormcloud sells their brews in unique, stainless steel and plastic growlers. A typical price for their stainless steel growler is $35, but the plastic version is much less expensive and keeps the beer just as delicious. When the glass growlers do arrive, they will be $5, with a $12-17 refill, depending on one’s beer of choice. Drafts of beer run at about $5-8 per glass.

Not only is Stormcloud’s beer reason enough to stop in and check the place out, but the food is making customers rave as well. John Snyder, a magician of the culinary arts, will be serving up Stormcloud’s cliental with a variety of tastes. Perhaps the most remarkable options come in the form of their many pizzas. The crusts of these pizzas are created with beer and beer yeast, and then topped with local and other exciting, non-traditional ingredients. There will also be various flavored popcorns, gazpacho, small appetizers, and whatever charcuterie boards of the day Snyder sees fit. I can say firsthand that any of the 16 beverages on tap will pair perfectly with these unique pizzas.

Among their 16 taps, Stormcloud will be serving up a cider or mead made specifically for them by St. Ambrose Cellars or Tandem Ciders. The remaining 15 taps will be full of must-try beers. Half will be Stormclouds’ staple beers, while the other half will rotate with seasonal and other new beers. While visiting, I had a nice flight of beers that each had an incomparable taste. My absolute favorite was The Handsome Bee. This is a Belgium blonde ale made with 100 pounds of honey from Sleeping Bear Farms. The taste of honey was just present enough to be noticeable and pulled the beer together to perfection.

And of course, being located in beautiful Frankfort and right on the water, the outdoor seating arrangements are just as cozy and desirable as anyone would expect. Picnic tables, high top tables, and cozy, wooden lounge chairs make up the deck area. Directly behind the seating area is a large glass window, looking right into the brewing area of Stormcloud, making it safe to say that fantastic views literally surround customers as they sip brews. Stormcloud Brewing Company employs about 20 people who are all eager to answer any questions you may have about their beer and food. Their hours are Monday through Saturday, 11am-11pm and Sundays from 12pm-11pm. Stop in immediately to pick up a growler on the beach or a nice draft and pizza for their patio. And of course, connect with Stormcloud Brewing Company on Facebook and Twitter!

Michigan has amazing people, delicious beer, and unlimited outdoor activities to participate in. One thing I have noticed about our mitten state is that no matter which city I am in, those factors do not change. I am a therapist by day and an explorer of all things Michigan the rest of the time.
