If you followed the Awesome Mitten’s Michigan Birthday Bake Off, you know what an exceptional batch of entries we received. From cupcakes to cookies to designs that even incorporated fresh fruit, the professional entries truly did justice to our state. But one entry stood out from the rest: a three tiered, champagne cake with strawberry filling, depicting some of Michigan’s most recognizable attributes (including the Mackinaw Bridge, the Great Lakes, apple blossoms, a robin, cherries, and even a mitten). Thus, the Awesome Mitten readers declared Second Floor Bakery the Bake Off’s very deserved winner.
While Second Floor Bakery specializes in specialty cakes (like their entry in our Bake Off) as well as wedding cakes, their menu also includes a mouthwatering assortment of breakfast pastries, cookies, specialty desserts and more. Founded in 2008 on the second floor of owner Katie Webster’s home with only two employees, Second Floor Bakery now produces these delectable sweet treats out of the Railside Center in Holland with four employees and a few seasonal interns.
Though still a somewhat small enterprise, Second Floor Bakery has an enormous reputation. Not only has Second Floor received some major accolades, such as First Place People’s Choice at Dessert Wars in February, their clientele also fast become life-long customers. Marketing Director Kaylee Glass notes that this is one of her favorite parts of the business, saying, “We are so proud to become a part of your family starting with your wedding cake and then baby shower and then birthday cakes!”
It is this focus on building a relationship with their customers and delivering a variety of delicious products that has built the incredible Second Floor Bakery reputation. Indeed, one could go back hundreds of times and still get something different and exciting on each trip; with more than seven cake flavors, 10 different fillings, nine unique icings, and 12 distinct add-ins, the cake variations alone
are tremendous. In addition to these scrumptious options, Second Floor Bakery also offers cakes for rent in eight different designs, satisfying your aesthetic needs and a tight budget all at once.
Not only do the creations of Second Floor Bakery save customers money, in certain circumstances, they help raise money for charitable organizations. Second Floor is currently attempting to break the world record for the largest cinnamon roll, with funds benefiting Bethany Christian Services. And yet between creations for charities, weddings, birthday parties, and every other occasion you can think of, the staff at Second Floor Bakery knew they couldn’t pass on the chance to show their Michigan pride in the Awesome Mitten Bake Off.
By using their most popular flavor and incorporating all of their favorite quintessential Michigan characteristics, Second Floor Bakery’s winning design was truly a source of pride for all involved. Head Decorator Kellie Alvarado said of the project, “It was fun designing a Michigan themed cake because of all the great things our state had to offer!”, while Dessert Baker Megan Johnson remarks, “We loved participating in a contest that promotes Michigan and its local businesses!” Michiganders can be proud to call Second Floor Bakery such a business.
