Sandy’s Donuts

This is about waking-up on that morning. That morning when you are brutally slapped awake at dawn by a list of things you are loath to do that is only slightly less intensive than the Warren Reports. That morning when your gut feels like you downed a bottle of crazy glue and the the contents of your stomach glom around a deep gulch of anxiety. That morning when you mentally plot out the quickest route to the hardware store for as many sheets of plywood as you can carry while considering the practicalities of hermitry. This is what to do on that morning. Collect yourself, perform a few light calisthenics, and take a trip to Sandy’s Donuts.

Now, there is a lot of chatter out on the internet about Sandy’s Donuts on Leonard and Covell in west Grand Rapids. In particular, the words “best donuts in town” keep cropping up on my browser. In total candor, I can’t match that flood of enthusiasm, and I wouldn’t want to try.

Over the past two months, I have paid a visit to the red and yellow awninged building at least once a week for a cherry fritter and a cup of coffee, and nearly every time I go the counter is swarmed with eager patrons waiting to make their doughnut selection. Oh yeah, another set of words you’ll find attached to Sandy’s Donuts is “come early”, if not to beat the crowd then to at least get first crack at the early morning batch.

But let’s get back to that morning you’re having. You’re feeling languid, unmotivated, angsty with the prospect of what the day will bring. Taking that first step into Sandy’s Donuts will obliterate all that as you are greeted with a menagerie of frosted confections all flaunting an astrologic projection of flavors to kick off the morning proper. Between traditional glazed to jelly to cinnamon rolls to eclairs or my personal favorite, fritters, everyone will find something they love at Sandy’s. But the best part of all this is that whatever you choose will be less than a dollar apiece.

Sandy’s Donuts is one of those supremely local treats. That small staple of a city that adds character and a sense of place to a city. Whether you stick around Sandy’s and enjoy your morning treat with a roomful of satisfied regulars, or drive off with your doughnut and your cup of coffee to whatever tasks you were so dreading when you woke-up, there is an undeniable feeling of calming immediacy to the handheld morning treats at Sandy’s Donuts, a feeling that will definitely make whatever follows that much easier to meet.
