It’s officially winter time in Michigan. It seems the snow has arrived with an apology and is trying to make up for her absence in December…in the form of snowing, blowing, and questionable road conditions! There’s no better season than a Michigan winter to snuggle up with the people you love. While many consider Valentine’s Day to be a greeting card holiday, it’s admittedly a nice reminder to have a day designated to celebrating those people. I love Traverse City, and for the couples, families and friends that want to spend that winter weekend in the north, I’m excited to showcase some ideas for a lovely Valentine’s Day.
Because I don’t like the idea of crumbs where I sleep, breakfast in bed is a hard concept to get behind. Sleep in and check out Patisserie Amie, a French restaurant that has locals and visitors raving about the cuisine. Patisserie Amie was named as one of the top five breakfast places in Traverse City by fellow AM writer Joanna Dueweke and while they serve dinner as well, the crepes are enough to get people out of bed. For lunch, or if you’re celebrating your love connection with the whole family, try Slabtown Burger on Front Street. Not only are the burgers/sandwiches/soups affordable, they are also delicious, and can easily be taken to-go! Taking dinner to the next level? Make a reservation at Red Ginger, the hottest sushi bar in town. Even if you’ve been there a dozen times, the constantly evolving menu makes for a different visit each time. I don’t even like raw things and I enjoy myself every time I go to Red Ginger! Plus, after dinner, a walk through downtown TC or just next door to the State Theatre would be perfectly romantic.
If you’re trying to think outside the box for a fun Valentine’s weekend, check out the schedule for the fifth annual TC Winter Comedy Arts Festival. Founded by Michael Moore and Jeff Garlin, this weekend is brought to you by the team of Cherry Festival and TC Film Festival – so you know it’s good. While the full-fledged schedule for February 13th and 14th hasn’t been released, we do know that Bill Maher is the festival headliner and that there are options for all ages based on the venue you choose to hang out at. Like them on Facebook to get quick updates as the 2015 info is released!
A Group Celebration
If this year is one with no significant other in the picture, that doesn’t mean you have to stay home and mope! With as many as thirteen of your closest friends, TC Cycle Pub would love to be with you on this occasionally depressing holiday. Even if you are with your darling, make it a couples and friends night out on the bike and see some of TC’s most popular microbrewery and bar locales. The circle cycle seats six and the cycle pub seats fourteen so send out the invites and book your tour today! This may go without saying, but do make sure you dress warmly enough for a outdoor bicycle ride in February.
Wherever you are, and whomever you’re celebrating, Happy Valentine’s Day this coming February! Comment below and let us know where else love comes alive in Traverse City.
