Race Across the Mitten: IT’S HOT

Race Across the Mitten: IT’S HOT

I have come to the conclusion that Michiganders appreciate sunshine more than anyone else. With such long winters, hot days in the sun are a rare gem that we must grasp and hold onto the best we can. Warm weather and sunshine also allow for a broader variety of races. Water obstacles and trails become a big part of summer races in Michigan, so read on and sign up for one of these exciting events!

All of the funds raised for this wild race go to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This year, Muckfest MS Detroit is taking place on Belle Isle on August 3rd and is shaping up to be even messier and crazier than ever. It is a five-mile course that is designed to get you dirty. There are mazes, craters, and pits that runners have to navigate through to reach the finish line. The course also includes obstacles that can knock you down, sideways, or spin you in a completely different direction. Registration is slightly expensive ($100), but worth it for the giggles and mess created along the way. Runners also receive a T-Shirt, lunch, and two beers post-race (adults only, of course). Let’s not forget, all the proceeds from this race support MS, so sign up, get muddy, and have an amazing time while completing a challenging five-mile race.

Those of us who are familiar with The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore know that Good Morning America named it the “Most Beautiful Place in America” for good reasons. There cannot be a better way to enjoy this incredibly scenic area than a 5K fun run. The duration of this course takes runners through farmland and fields and past lighthouses and log cabins. This race is a loop course through the Bayview Trail and the start and finish take place at the park’s historic Olsen Farmstead. If you register before August 1st, the cost is merely $25 ($30 after August 1st). Local merchants will be present to give out prizes to runners post-race and there will be delicious food offered as well.

Everyone is familiar with Detroit’s Woodward Dream Cruise; it is a weekend long event that takes over Woodward Avenue with extravagant cars and all the people who share a love for those cars. The Cruise in Shoes 5K offers a different way to take over Woodward Avenue: on foot. This race takes place in Royal Oak, starting and finishing at Shrine Catholic High School. Registration is $30 until August 9th, then rises to $35. The race itself starts at 7:30am, but there is a costume contest starting at 7:00am that you won’t want to miss. This year’s costume theme is the 1950’s, and the best costume will win a fantastic prize. After the race, runners, along with friends and family of runners, are invited to the post-race party at Duggan’s Irish Pub, which is just a short walk from the Cruise in Shoes finish line. Don’t forget to bring your race bib to the after-party, Duggan’s will have food and drink specials all day for runners.

What summer races have you been running? Are there any that the Awesome Mitten staff needs to know about?

Michigan has amazing people, delicious beer, and unlimited outdoor activities to participate in. One thing I have noticed about our mitten state is that no matter which city I am in, those factors do not change. I am a therapist by day and an explorer of all things Michigan the rest of the time.
