Memorial Day Weekend is rapidly approaching, which means summer running will be in full swing. There are many fantastic races taking place throughout Michigan this weekend, so many, in fact, that it was difficult to choose which one I wanted to participate in. The three that caught my eye were the 10th Annual Mackinaw Memorial Bridge Race, the Bayshore in Traverse City, and the Grin and Bear It 50K in Lowell.
10th Annual Mackinaw Memorial Bridge Race
With only three opportunities to cross the Mackinaw Bridge on foot, it would be shameful not to participate in at least one of them. Aside from the Memorial Day Race, patrons have the option of walking in the Annual Labor Day Bridge Walk or running the Fall Colors Bridge Race in October. The Memorial Weekend Race takes place on Saturday, May 25th this year and is five miles long. The cost to register is currently $50, but will go up to $60 on race day. There is even a free, hot breakfast for all registered runners! Additional breakfast tickets can be purchased for $9.
The Bayshore Marathon
Also taking place on May 25th, the Bayshore Marathon is presented by the Traverse City Track Club who spends much of their time and energy bettering the trails and running organizations of Grand Traverse County. There are three distance options to run in Traverse City’s annual Bayshore: the 10K, half marathon, and full marathon. The route is the same for all three races, just adjusted according to the length one signed up to run. I have done the 10K and the half marathon, and I must say, this course is absolutely stunning. It takes place on the Old Mission Peninsula and follows the shoreline the entire time. Current registration fees for the 10K are $50, for the half marathon, $80, and for the marathon, $95.
The Grin and Bear It 50K
The thought of a 50K seems very daunting. Don’t fret! This 50K taking place in Lowell can be run solo or as a relay race. This entire race is on trails and takes place on Monday, May 27th. This race starts at 7am, and runners have until dark falls that evening to complete it. Located in Fallasburg Park, each loop of the race is 10.3 miles long. The cost of this race is $50 per person if you are running it solo and $50 per group if you are participating as a relay team.
It’s hard to imagine starting the summer off without the adrenaline and energy that only a race day can bring. If you haven’t already signed up for a race to run this summer, it’s not too late! Many registrations are still open and races are offered all throughout Michigan. I hope to see you out there!
Do you plan on running any races this Memorial Weekend? Are there any other summer races that you are particularly excited for?
