The Grand Rapids Symphony is well known for its classical and orchestral performances, but during the summer they head outdoors for one of the most unique and popular musical events in West Michigan. Picnic Pops is a concert series on Thursdays and Fridays in July and August on the slopes of Cannonsburg Ski Area where guests enjoy festive picnic suppers while listening to music performed by the Grand Rapids Symphony. Folks are encouraged to arrive as early as 5:30 p.m. to take in the sights and sounds of the pre-concert local music entertainment. Many families pack a picnic dinner for the night, and there is also grilled items, drink,s and more available for purchase. Guests should feel free to wear comfortable, casual clothes, as this is not a formal concert setting by any means. Check out the Symphony’s Facebook page for more on this event and others.
“The atmosphere is entertaining, relaxing, and great way to spend time with friends and family and enjoy great music,” said Samara Napolitan, Patron Engagement & Communications Coordinator for the Grand Rapids Symphony.
Guests can opt to bring a blanket or lawn chair or buy reserved chairs or tables that are situated right in front of the stage with the best view of the musicians, guest artists and the setting sun behind the shell. If you have kids, you won’t want to miss the Family Fun Area. Available before each concert from the time the gates open to a half hour before the concert starts, it’s free to all ticket holders and includes a different craft activity each week. Always offered: face painting and an instrument petting zoo where kids and adults can try select instruments from the orchestra. This area is clearly marked and easy to find. The price is much lower than what you would pay for a traditional music concert.

To supplement the 2014 Picnic Pops, Music & Microbrews serves up a unique event. Music & Microbrews events occur every Thursday during the Picnic Pops series. During the first three Thursdays, the event is sponsored by various organizations in West Michigan. However, the last Thursday, July 31, serves as a party for young professionals during the Music of the Eagles concert. “The 21-35 demographic is very active in West Michigan’s microbrew culture. We wanted to invite the area’s young professionals out to Cannonsburg to enjoy the company of friends and great music with a beer in hand. We thought that the Music of Eagles paired well with the casual, summer feel of the event,” said Napolitan. The ticket price includes concert admission, free buffet dinner, one free beverage, yard games and more. $30 per person or $50 for couples.
