brew scaled October Oatmeal Challenge

October Oatmeal Challenge

The oatmeal market in Traverse City is largely untapped. This month, I have dedicated all of my extra time and energy into seeking out the best oatmeal this city has to offer. Texture, added ingredients, temperature, and presentation were all examined during this process. Boy, it’s been a good month. Read on to see who has won Awesome Mitten’s October Oatmeal Challenge.

Grand Traverse Pie Company

The Grand Traverse Pie Company is a staple in Traverse City. It only makes sense that their oatmeal would be in my top three oatmeal choices. With candied pecans, sweet blueberries, and just a dusting of brown sugar, this breakfast brings back the classic definition of “oatmeal.”

Brew honestly took all things into consideration with their oatmeal presentation. It arrives dry, with a tea kettle of hot water accompanying it. Personally, I prefer my oatmeal semi-dry and extra sticky, so I loved that I could add as little or as much hot water as I pleased. Brew’s oatmeal comes with choices, and as Americans, I know we all like variety with our food. It comes plain, with a scoop of brown sugar on top for $2.50. However, additions such as pecans, raisins, and dried cherries can be added for a mere 50 cents per topping. Considering Brew is in the heart of downtown Traverse City, the dried cherries were delightful. The crunch of the pecans made a superb addition as well. Crunchy oatmeal was not something I had considered in my pre-October days. Now that I’ve experienced the crunch, I simply cannot go back.

Morsels

Morsels is widely known for its crafty desserts. However, their oatmeal makes this coffee shop a great breakfast location as well. Once again, pecans pack the crunch of this dish, but the true extraordinary aspect is the sweet, baked apples on top. This bowl of oatmeal is made with warm milk for a creamier, richer finish.

Honorable Mention/Beagle’s Choice: Oryana

What good is a competition without an honorable mention? Oryana’s baked and packaged oatmeal is outstanding. The only reason it was not in the top three is because it is not served hot at that establishment; one must purchase it, then warm it up independently. However, this was Martin the beagle’s favorite oatmeal. Why? Because I was able to take it home and share it with him.

From my enthusiastic descriptions, can you guess which is my favorite? I won’t leave you in suspense. Brew wins, hands down. The presentation, taste, and add-ons make this a clear Jennifer favorite. Please, check it out for yourselves, friends.
