The Awesome Mitten was born when I moved back to Michigan from Nashville, TN in September 2010. Almost immediately, I became frustrated. I couldn’t figure out why there weren’t more Michigan residents singing our states praises! I was so irritated, I wrote a Letter to the Editor. Three weeks later, I had started a Facebook page, a Twitter account, and a landing page for the website, determined to do something to make Michigan residents aware of all the cool things going on in their own state. Fall in Michigan is truly seeing our state in all it’s magnificence! I’d like to suggest the trek to Copper Harbor, rounding your way along to Eagle Harbor. Next, find yourself riding the east side shoreline of 23 between Tawas and Alpena. Finally, go west side and north, to the breathtaking views along M119 from Harbor Springs to Cross Village. Happy travels!! #MittenTrip

From the Detroit side along the river up through Port Huron to around the thumb following Bay City to Huron County.

  • Monroe or Cheboygan!

  • Rachel Sherrell

Go see the elk at Pigeon River Country State Forest

  • Robin

    Come to Kalamazoo!

  • Ashlee Atkinson

Frankenmuth for Oktoberfest or Indian River for the boat races (August 16-17) or boat from Indian River to Lake Michigan. It’s a long day but it’d be nice in good fall weather before it gets too cold. Also, Silver Lake and/or Traverse City.

How about Isle Royale? Such a beatuiful place to go and a little bit of a hidden gem. Another beautiful hidden gem: Au Sable River Valley. Check out the Lumberman’s Monument–it’s a great historical marker that represents a huge part of Michigan’s heritage. Views you never knew existed on the east side of the state (although the Sunrise Side IS beautiful!)

For fall, you can’t go wrong with anywhere in Leelanau County. No city required. Just drive and enjoy the amazing fall foliage — some of the best in the entire state! Of course, a stop at one of the many awesome orchards for cider and donuts is a must!

Traverse City & I have to agree with John – Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising.
