Once upon a time in the land shaped like a mitten, a rising star was born.
Some aspiring singers only dream about pop star Ke$ha saying she’s obsessed with them publicly, and a rap legend like Ludacris falling over dramatically during their audition for a music show. For Megan Tibbits, this is reality. Tibbits joins the Michigander Selfie Series as her star begins to glow brighter coast to coast.
The Rising Star Contestant (elimated in week 7), is a native of Caro, Michigan with a degree from Cornerstone University in Music Education. Tibbits began her music career in a family band when she was just 2 years old, then her parents quit their full time jobs to travel in a motor home and sing in churches. With music always around, Tibbits picked up piano, guitar, harp, and oboe. Instruments didn’t always come easy, “It was a natural part of me, but I only loved it after the discipline.”
Discipline and drive led this songbird to chase the sunset to the place where dreams are made: California. Tibbits quit her job and risked it all to audition on the X-Factor. After being eliminated, she swore she would never do another show again. However, when shows got a hold of her YouTube channel, the offers began to pour in. One being Rising Star.
Rising Star, is a singing competition that allows the viewers to decide who moves forward via voting on their mobile devices. There is also an expert panel of judges including Ke$ha, Brad Paisley and Ludacris that influence the vote. “They said we’d love to have you audition, but I didn’t think it would go anywhere. God kept opening doors, which is cool when you’re not trying.” Tibbits, a naturally driven go-getter is amazed and in awe of the journey unfolding before her.
Although Tibbits was eliminated from the show, the opportunity was not wasted. Tibbits is clear that every moment has had a reason. “I was terrified of being judged, which is the purpose of the whole show.” However, Megan believes she would be a mess if she didn’t trust the Lord in this outcome. “If that’s God’s plan, it is. If not, He will show you something better.”
Tibbits dreams of writing, touring, and inspiring. She longs to share what comes from her heart to give people encouragement and hope in their purpose. She has a connection to artists that create meaningful pieces because that is what inspires her to write; she wants to make people feel deeply in response to music to bring hope.
Tibbits encourages aspiring musicians to perform as much as possible. “In front of people. In random coffee houses. Build your confidence. Nerves can keep you from taking the next step.” Megan is not a stranger to the risky advice she so freely gives out. When she quit her job, she was terrified, but willing to work. “Work hard at what you love. Good singers won’t get anywhere without drive. You have to take a risk.”
One elimination isn’t going to take this Mitten Girl down because she’s still chasing sunsets and her dreams. If a door doesn’t open for her, this high flyer will kick it down.
Although LA is the place Megan knows she needs to be right now, she misses Michigan fall with all of her heart. Give her a blanket, jacket, tree and leaves, and you’ll have one happy Michigander.
