For an authentic Up North experience in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, you can head to Falmouth. This small town in central Michigan is located between the tourist towns of Houghton Lake and Cadillac, making it an easy place to go for a quick day trip during your summer vacation in northern Michigan. The most famous attraction in Falmouth is the Maple Leaf Farm & Creamery, which is a goat farm that raises goats and produces artisan goat milk and cheese.
About Maple Leaf Farm & Creamery
While agriculture has long played an important role in the northern Michigan economy, Maple Leaf Farm & Creamery has blended the best of the agriculture and tourism industries in order to create a unique experience for local residents and travelers alike. This farm is a favorite among families with young children because they can come to visit the farm and enjoy a tour to see the animals. In addition, guests are able to enroll in cheese and soap-making classes. These learning opportunities not only give them a chance to develop a new skill, but these classes also teach them more about life on the farm and how farm-fresh products are used in our daily lives.
In addition to checking out the adorable goats and taking a cheese-making class, you also can head to the farm’s kitchen in order to pick up some tasty products to bring home with you. The farm’s fully-licensed kitchen serves up a variety of entrées and side dishes, all of which are created with the fresh goat cheese that is made on the farm as well as the vegetables and herbs that are grown on-site in the gardens. If you happen to live near Falmouth or this destination is close to your Michigan cottage, then you can enroll in the farm’s farm-the-fork CSA, which would allow you to get fresh products weekly from the farm.
Before you leave the farm, don’t forget to head to the flower fields where you can pick up some fresh-cut flowers. This farm specializes in cut flowers, and there are always many colorful varieties available throughout the summer months.
