Letter from the Editor: Leaving the Terrible Twos Behind

Michigangsters, We did it! On June 6th, this publication will turn three. Our second year was full of highs, lows, transitions, and excitement, but we’re toddling along into this next year with full force.

I won Skee-Ball, I guess.

I am currently sitting at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, feeling overwhelmed and inspired by the Mackinac Policy Conference. More on the conference later, but for now I’ll suffice it to say that we couldn’t have asked for better weather on the island while we spend three full days inside! I am incredibly thankful, however, to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for hosting the Blogger Zone, a brand-new addition to #MPC14. The last month of our second year was ripe with change. We hired two new associate editors, enjoyed a full schedule of daily content, and spent a lot of time creating solutions to problems that only we as perfectionists can identify. Alex and I are holding each other accountable for achieving some serious goals for the next month so that we can continue what we’re doing for you, our readers, as well as take more steps into the future of the digital publication culture. This is all a work in progress, after all, and the work will never be done. We’re excited and honored to have the opportunity to share our work with you!

I was so surprised to find it that I didn’t even eat it.

Personally, I spent May basking in the glow of the slightly spotty northern Michigan sunshine. I’m happy to say that I found exactly one morel mushroom, took my first dip in a brand-new-to-me inland lake (who knew there was a Long Lake in Missaukee County?), and completely lost track of my running schedule in favor of sleeping in. I’m a work in progress too, folks, and I’m glad about it. So now, it’s June. What are we writing in June? Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for: -BIRTHDAY POSTS! Our veteran writers (Joanna, Jennifer and Hayley) will be publishing their top-three lists of favorite stories they’ve written over the past three years. Alex will share a list of YOUR favorite stories based on analytics. -Jennifer’s detail of Emmet County’s new Dark Sky Park and Suttons Bay’s first microbrewery Hop Lot, -Hayley’s look at Made In The Mitten, Michigan’s newest subscription box company (complete with an exclusive GIVEAWAY!) -News about this summer’s must-attend festival (in my humble opinion, since I’m one of the event directors), the Traverse City Wine & Art Festival, from Jess, -A look, through Jonathon’s eyes, of Comerica Park and the Tigers, -Mariah’s overview of the summer music lineup at Meadow Brook Music Festival, -A summary of Zoo Brew from Chaz, -Joanna’s look at BCBSM’s #HealthyMe campaign, … and more!

Barefoot Bernhard girls are happy Bernhard girls.

Along with our birthday posts, stay tuned for more birthday celebration updates. Like I said, #TeamAwesome is bursting with fresh perspectives and new ideas and as soon as we rein it in, we’ll be able to roll it out to each of you. Until then, thank you! Thanks for sticking with us for three years and thanks for committing to learning everything there is to know about all things awesome in Michigan. Interested in participating? We’re always hiring contributors. I’m always raising my #mibeer to you, Michigan. Cheers, Erin
