This year, mitten state craft beer fans have a new beer-sampling event to add to their repertoire. This November 1st, Wings Stadium Events Center will be hosting the first Kalamazoo Craft Beer Festival. For fans of the ever-growing number of award-winning breweries in Michigan, this event is a can’t-miss; of the more than 50 breweries that will be in attendance, 32 are based right here in Michigan.
Presented by Old Burdick’s Bar & Grill, the inaugural event will run all afternoon (1 PM to 7 PM on Saturday the 1st), with attendees given 10 tasting tokens with their general admission tickets (a bargain at $35 ahead of time or $40 at the door). There will also be a VIP ticket option for $60 which includes five additional tasting tokens and early admission.
Once you’ve decided which ticket to purchase, then comes the really tough choice: which brews to sample. With Michigan favorites including Bell’s Brewing, Short’s Brewing Company, Founders Brewing Company, New Holland Brewing, Brewery Vivant, and national powerhouses like Woodchuck Hard Cider, New Belgium, Samuel Adams, Dogfish Head, Big Sky Brewing, the decision of where to turn over your tasting tokens won’t be an easy one.
But that, as Rob Underwood, Entertainment Director at Wings Stadium, points out, is the point. He says, “We wanted to showcase a variety of craft beer across the country to all the beer lovers in the Kalamazoo area. Beer lovers should plan on spending a whole day at the event, learning about the different types of craft beer. We’re planning on tapping a unique beer at every half hour.”
During that time, attendees will also be able to visit brewery booths around the event; in addition to serving up tastings of a variety of their craft beers, the breweries will also be educating patrons on their brews, providing hops and brewing workshops, and hosting a one-of-a-kind keg curling competition.
Yes, you read that correctly. Kalamazoo Craft Beer Festival will feature keg curling. If you’ve never heard of such a sport, first, you’re not alone. Second, check out the video; I guarantee you’ll be not only intrigued, but dying to try your hand at this zany game.
During the double-elimination tournament, 32 teams of three (teams sign up on a first come, first served basis) will have three passes with two full kegs and a single pony kegs to vie for the “traveling keg curling cup”, on which the winning team’s name will be engraved.
So whether you’re looking to try your hand at a new off-beat sport, or just to try a few new brews, the first Kalamazoo Craft Beer Festival won’t disappoint.
Pick up your tickets today, and be sure to tell us what brewery you’re most excited to see at Wings Stadium come November 1st!
