It seems like you can’t wake up without it being a day dedicated to something or other. Pancakes, pizza, cats; you name it, it probably has a day. While some of these might be a little bit corny, it’s always fun to celebrate things you like. Today is the International Day of Happiness, which seems like the perfect day to remember what we love about our lives. From friends to family to hobbies, there’s so much that brings us joy that is worthy of praise. We asked The Awesome Mitten team to share photos or stories (or both!) about what makes them happy, specifically about our wonderful state of Michigan.
“There’s no doubt that Michigan is my ‘Happy Place,’ and there are many reasons why. Most of all, Michigan’s four seasons bring me joy. Each season arrives with a bounty of gifts, and new opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Michigan empowers my kids to be adventurous and active all year round. And that, more than anything, makes me happy.”
“I haven’t exactly traveled the world, but I struggle to come up with a better location to live and play than West Michigan. It’s home to one of the greatest craft beer meccas on the entire planet, has no shortage of quality restaurant offerings, and it boasts one of the most rich and diverse music scenes in the country. Not to mention Lake Michigan is, like, right there.”
“The beauty of the four seasons and the people who live here who work everyday to make Michigan awesome. I always say that is the best part of the ‘job.’ In my travels and research, I meet and learn about awesome people who create and work to make this state great.
“Growing up in Michigan is definitely the greatest thing to ever happen to me. I may not be here forever, my family has almost completely fled the state, but I know that I’ll always have this beautiful place to come back to. All the people are friendly, all the places are great, and there’s never a reason to not be smiling in the Mitten.”
“The Mitten State makes me happy because it’s a place where, as much as we claim to hate the snow and Michigan winters, I know deep down that first pretty white sparkly snowfall warms up any Michigander’s heart. And the hearts are big — that whole Midwestern ‘thing’ is genuine.”
“The over 3,000 miles of shoreline is what makes me happiest about Michigan. I love the beach, and I love that you can travel to so many different beaches and beach towns in Michigan. Even in the winter the beaches are beautiful. There is always a new shoreline to discover.”
“I love that we can experience all four seasons, and that we’re never far from a lake. Plus, the people that make up this great state are pretty awesome too!”
“What doesn’t make me happy in Michigan? That’s my photo up top, and who can argue with views like that? Whether you want the idyllic peace of nature offered up North or the big city vibe that Grand Rapids and Detroit bring, there’s always something new to experience.”
“I’ve done a lot of traveling over the past 3 years to other states and Michigan makes me the most happy because of the community we share. Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall all offer something for everyone to enjoy and share with others! Some of us curse the snow but have the biggest grin on our faces when the sun pops out while others of us get a rush from going ‘up north’ no matter what the season is.”
“I really like the quirks in our dialect, like pop instead of soda, ‘up north,’ tacking an ‘s’ onto a store you’re going to (e.g., Kroger’s), etc.”
“Michigan makes me happy because each season brings a whole new world. It’s impossible to get bored here! I love running through all four seasons, it makes my usual running routes seem completely new and exciting. Michigan based companies also do a great job of getting people excited for the different seasons. For example, many Northern Michigan wineries create snowshoe routes between wineries for a fun spin on winter wine tasting. To put it simply, I love looking forward to the new activities that each season brings. Snowboarding, windsurfing, running trails, disc golfing, salmon fishing, etc. Michigan has it all!”
There you have it, that’s what makes the team here happy about living in Michigan. We would love to hear all of your stories and see your photos of the things that bring you joy, as well!
