Hour Detroit’s Best Dressed Celebration

photoWhile Detroit has many defining characteristics, the city might not be readily recognized as a hub for fashion. It would be remiss, though, not to acknowledge that there are many metro Detroiters who embody the cutting edge of style most often recognized in cities such as New York or Los Angeles. Each year, Hour Detroit magazine compiles a list of metro Detroiters who are changing that perspective, and inspiring others with their unique, sharp fashion sense.

This year’s Best Dressed list, revealed in Hour Detroit’s November issue, pointed to the diversity of the Motor City’s trendsetters; among the thirteen honorees were musicians, CEOs, stylists, and even a Detroit Tiger. And what better way to gather and celebrate this eclectic range of glamour gurus than with Hour Detroit’s Best Dressed Celebration presented by Hillside Furniture?

Each year, after the list of the Motor City’s Best Dressed is revealed, Hour Detroit plans a celebration in their honor, complete with a fashion show featuring not only models, but the Best Dressed winners. This year’s party was held at the Fillmore theatre with fashion partner Neiman Marcus, and to call it an impressive production would not do it justice.

Upon entering (and checking tickets and coats), the first sight in the beautiful Fillmore theatre foyer was Detroit artist Tony Roko live painting a model who was towering over the crowd on stilts in a beautiful, colorful gown. My first remark was that I wished we had arrived early enough to see the full progress of the painting, but the few minutes we were able to watch were quite impressive.img_11132013_191132278

Also in the foyer, was Hillside Furniture’s Sofa Cam: a beautiful leather couch with the Hour Detroit November cover as a backdrop and nearly a dozen catchphrase adorned pillows to make a (much more comfortable version of a) photobooth of sorts. The TapSnap pictures were such a hit that we decided to postpone our turn until the line died down.

Walking into the elegant grand lobby of the Fillmore, there was yet another bit of photographic fun, this time in front of a backdrop of the Hour Detroit Best Dressed logo and a bevy of red roses. For those uninterested in a photo op, guests were also greeted with delicious hors d’oeuvres ranging from mini burgers to bruschetta to mini tacos. The delicious variety was made even more excellent when one of the servers gave us $10 off photo_1gift cards to Monty’s Beef Company in Royal Oak, who were behind those scrumptious mini tacos.

After a bit of mixing, mingling, and picture taking, it was time to take our seats for the fashion show. Before the show began, Jon Jordan, style editor of WDIV Local 4 and emcee for the evening, took the stage to welcome guests and set the mood for the upcoming show. Jordan was joined by WDIV anchors (and Detroit staples), Rhonda Walker and Evrod Cassimy, on stage for the preshow intro, where the trio took a quick turn on the catwalk for themselves and then the show began.

A cast of models and Best Dressed winners alike took to the stage to strut their stuff to the sounds of DJ Prevu and Jared Sykes. With hair and makeup styled by Figo Salon, dressed in the season’s latest fashions from Neiman Marcus, the fashion show was glamorous and edgy, and I certainly left with a laundry list of items that I will be asking Santa for this holiday season.photo_3

As an Hour Detroit employee, I had been to several events put on by the magazine in the past, but I am continually impressed by the skillfully crafted balance of elegance and fun at each event. The Best Dressed Celebration was no different; the party was as eclectic and entertaining as this year’s honorees.

The celebration was not just a shining example of the glamorous events put on by Hour Detroit magazine, but also of the vibrant style we so rarely see recognized in the Motor City. Pick up a copy of Hour Detroit’s November issue to read more on the winners and their style, and check out the Hour Detroit website to get tickets to upcoming events!
