5 Ways to Make the Most of the Holidays in Grand Rapids

Whether or not you are ready for the holiday season, it is coming on quickly with Thanksgiving later this week. In West Michigan, we had the lovely surprise of freshly fallen snow this weekend just in time for the festivities!

If you are having a little trouble getting into the holiday spirit, or if you are looking for some fun items to add to your holiday bucket list, I have some ideas for you in the Grand Rapids area:

1. Grand Rapids Holiday Celebrations: Tree Lighting & Skating Rink Opening

The Tree Lighting Ceremony is always beautiful as the outdoor skating rink in Rosa Park Circle is opened for the season! Be sure to bundle up before heading out for a night out on the ice. Keep your fingers crossed for some falling snow to make it extra special. Get the details from Facebook.

2. Grand Rapids Symphony: Holiday Pops

December 3 – 6, 2015

Taking place at the DeVos Performance Hall, this is a fun music filled event that can be enjoyed by people of any age. The concert is made complete with a holiday sing-a-long and even a visit from Santa.

3. 27th Annual Holiday Artists’ Market

December 4 – 5, 2015

An annual event put on by the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, there are tons of beautiful handcrafted goods made by local artisans. Also, there is live music and local food vendors to enjoy while you shop around for the best unique gifts in West Michigan. Admissions and parking are both free for this market, and you can find more information on Facebook.

4. Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World

November 24, 2015 – January 3, 2016

Held each year at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, this event combines carolers, reindeer on the rooftops, 300,000 twinkle lights, and over 40 trees decorated in different traditions from around the world. This is a pretty special event you don’t want to miss!

5. The Nutcracker Ballet

December 11 – 13 and 18 -20, 2015

Each year, the Grand Rapids Ballet puts on this classic story at the DeVos Performance Hall. My Mom and I went one year and it is still one of our favorite holiday memories. No Christmas season is complete without it!

There are lots of smaller events happening in surrounding West Michigan towns like Holland, Grand Haven, and Muskegon. Lots of parades, caroling, visits from Santa Clause, and shopping events filled with lots of cheer!
