Live music, craft beer, and original work presented by local artists make up the essence of the DIY Street Fair in Ferndale. The Fair is a free, 2-day, 3-night event that takes place on Friday, September 14, from 6pm to midnight, Saturday, September 15, from 11am to midnight, and Sunday, September 16, from 11am to 11pm. It is located on East Troy Street right off Woodward, and the website offers a map with directions for more detail on how to get there.
Events with this much to offer are rarely free, and the Fair remains so largely due to the efforts of its volunteers. New volunteers are always welcome, and it is a great way to get involved and learn more about the artists, chefs, and other local creators. There are applications available to volunteer for a wide range of responsibilities, including creating signage, assisting vendors, and first-aid assistance.
This year’s Fair boasts four days of live music on three different stages. Local artists include Chris Moore and Sons, Smudge Candy, and Fawn. A complete schedule of artists is available on the DIY Street Fair’s regularly updated website, which also provides links to many of the artists’ webpages so attendees can check out performers they might like to see before arriving. The marketplace is full of local vendors at booths selling clothing, homemade soaps, paintings, and an abundance of other products. A complete list of vendors is available on the DIY Street Fair’s website, which can be searched for alphabetically, by category, or by booth number.
Restaurant Row, sponsored by Eat It Detroit, is full of amazing local restaurants and food trucks serving up their most popular creations. Vegetarian options, ice cream, and coffee are also available, and arriving hungry is advisable! Treat Dreams, El Guapo, and Garden Fresh Gourmet are just a few of the many restaurants presenting themselves at this year’s DIY Street Fair. Not only is Restaurant Row available for your grazing pleasure, but the Beer Garden currently has ten confirmed breweries, with anticipation of more to come. Brewery Vivant, Arbor Brewing Company, and Milking It Productions are among those making an appearance and serving up their delicious craft brews.
The Kids’ Zone offers free activities for children, including hands-on art-making, a climbing wall, and a dunk tank. The Detroit School of Rock and Pop will be there to allow children to try instruments and learn about the process of creating music.
The DIY 5K and Fun Run take place on Saturday, September 15, at 10am. Registration fees are $25 for the 5K ($30 the day of the event) and $10 for the Fun Run, with proceeds going to support art programs in Ferndale Public Schools. Registered runners will receive an event t-shirt, a drink ticket, and a locally-sponsored goody bag. The DIY Street Fair has so much to offer that it should be an unmissable event on your early Fall calendar.
