South Street Skateshop and the Rochester Downtown Development Authority are collaborating a fourth time to hold Deck Art 2014 on East Fourth Street and Main in Downtown Rochester, May 15th and 16th from 5-9.
Roughly 380 participants from our awesome Mitten, more than seven states, and even Canada have creatively adorned blank skateboard decks, which will be exhibited at over 50 vendors in the downtown area. Deck Art not only displays local and regional artists’ work to customers at local businesses but also gives said artists yet another outlet to promote and sell their pieces. Local vendors often promote deals and provide coupons for customers shopping during event hours.
Since registration in March, artists have been decorating their boards. Any media is acceptable and everyone was encouraged to participate in this public competition. Decks are judged in Elementary, Middle, and High School categories, as well as College, Adult, and Professional, with prizes distributed at each level. Each deck is a fully-functional piece of art: a one-of-a-kind design that can also be used as an actual skateboard deck.
Judging, followed by the award announcements, will take place on Friday with artists taking part in an “exhibition crawl” to determine where their individual pieces have been displayed in the downtown area. Deck Art 2014 will feature local food trucks such as Beignets 2 Go, Jaques’ Tacos, and The Mean Weenie and is sponsored by businesses including Home Bakery, Main Street Deli, Studio One Salon and many more. Live performances are provided by Kincer Catallo Private Studio on Thursday night and Saline Fiddlers will be present on Friday. Kids’ activities, interactive artwork, and more are sure to keep everyone entertained.
So before you hit the half-pipe this weekend, hit Deck Art 2014 and support local artists by buying a new board while you’re there!
