There really isn’t anything that goes better with an ice cold Faygo or completes a snack table at a summer barbeque quite like Better Made chips. As the official chip of the Detroit Lions, Red Wings, these snacks are an icon of Detroit. The local lineage puts them in the ranks with companies like Faygo and Sanders for being Michigan-started and continuously operating in the state for over 80 years—something not many companies can boast about today.
Cross Moceri, a Detroit native, dreamed of opening a potato chip factory in downtown Detroit. Asking his close friend Peter Cipriano to join him, Moceri and Cipriano purchased a building near by Eastern Market. Peter’s and Cross Incorporated started in 1930, and then four years later became known as Better Made Chips. The chip factory boomed over the next two decades and in order to accommodate more orders the factory moved in 1955 to where it is currently located on the north side of Detroit on Gratiot Avenue (just north of where Faygo is made, by the way). To this day, Better Made remains a family-owned local company after 82 years of business.
Better Made prides itself on using premium products and buying local, in-season produce to make their chips. In the summer they purchase potatoes from around the US, but during the fall potato harvest Better Made purchases their potatoes from Michigan farms. Additionally, no Better Made workers handle the potatoes from when they leave the farm until the customer opens the bag.
Better Made chips are mostly sold in Michigan; although people can find the chips in some stores around the Midwest. However, if consumers live outside the area and crave some chips, Better Made offers an online store and will ship the snacks right to the customer’s door.
Throughout the years, Better Made expanded to reach more consumers by adding popcorn, pretzels, tortilla chips, beef jerky, and other assorted snack items to their product line. About a year ago, Better Made teamed up with McClure’s Pickles to make pickle flavored chips. McClure’s Spicy or Garlic Pickle-flavored chips are available at most stores and gas stations in the Metro Detroit area. A bag of these delicious spuds costs only 99-cents.
Better Made’s commitment to Michigan and working with other local companies to create new products for over 80 years is an amazing feat. This summer, make sure to add Better Made snacks to your shopping list. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter, too!
