Photographer Brett King’s passion comes from finding the positivity in life. King, who is based out of East Lansing, aims to capture the beauty in every day situations–as a reminder of just how lucky we are to be surrounded by such splendor. In the same way that a slight angle change can make a subject come alive in a photograph, just a slight shift in our way of thinking can turn an adverse situation into something beautiful.
Growing up, King was always interested in photography. In a recent viewing of home videos, he had the pleasure of seeing his three-year-old self, standing with his mom’s camera around his neck. He was shouting, “I want to take a picture! Fire! Fire!”
Along with his love for photography, King has a passion for teaching and mentoring. He studied communications at Michigan State University, and has been asked by his alma mater to be a Featured Artist in Conversation at MSU’s Residential College in the Arts and Humanities. Through this, King will get to work directly with students and hold different camera workshops. Being a huge supporter of this program, he is honored and proud to have been given the opportunity to be a part of it. He is currently working on a curriculum for basic and advanced webinars, where he will be able to share his passion and talent with others who have similar interests.
What fascinates King about photography is its ability to transcend all professions and all lifestyles. He believes that any one person, at any point, can choose to freeze a moment. King maintains that, through photography, our interpretation of reality serves as a reminder that we are all part of a bigger human experience.
“Sometimes it simply documents that sliver of time as we remember it. More often than not though, by limiting our perspective we are exposed to a much deeper reality than what we originally experienced,” he says. “That’s an incredible thought.”
Video production is yet another passion King holds dear to his heart. He is the Director of Photography at The Scene Magic, where he produces, directs, and edits. King also takes any opportunity to consult for different schools and businesses, further deepening his love of teaching. The Scene Magic creates a special assortment of still photography and motion media video production. The name, “The Scene Magic,” was coined because these artists are on a constant lookout for that hint of absolute visual harmony–and have a knack for
