With two Michigan locations in prime beach hotspots, Wet Mitten Surf Shop is an ideal place to purchase everything related to water sport activities. Grand Haven and Traverse City are both home to this one of a kind surf shop. Brothers John and Ben McNeil created Wet Mitten Surf Shop for people to be able to “Explore Michigan’s other half.” These two grew up actively participating in water sports and wanted to be able to share their passion with fellow Michiganders.
One of the best things about purchasing water sport gear from the McNeil brothers is their extensive knowledge on all of their items. Curious about stand up paddleboarding? These gentlemen are able to tell you all about which board you should try out, based on where you want to do your paddle boarding; if you want to use it for competition or recreation; and the different styles of paddleboarding you may want to try out. Starting this spring, Wet Mitten Surf Shop will be hosting a series of “demo days” in which interested customers can come try out a variety of paddleboards. If you can’t make one of the demo days, rentals are available as well. If you end up purchasing one of these magnificent inventions, the McNeil brothers will deduct the rental fee from your purchase.
Aside from stand up paddleboards, Wet Mitten Surf Shop has surfboards, skateboards, longboards, kiteboards, and all the apparel necessary to partake in these outdoor activities. John McNeil is a certified instructor with the International Kiteboarding Organization and offers lessons to those who are eager to learn. McNeil stresses the importance of first time kiteboarders taking lessons from a professional in order to ensure safety. Being able to read the wind and weather conditions are a key component to kiteboarding and Michigan’s great lakes can be tricky.
Attempting to purchase any of these commodities for the first time can be overwhelming. There are so many factors to consider: height, weight, level of athleticism, and purpose. For that reason, the McNeil brothers dedicated a portion of their website to purchasing tips. This page is full of helpful information to get you started with your purchase. Easier yet, the McNeils both welcome drop-ins and phone call inquiries regarding getting started with these sports.
The Wet Mitten Surf Shop is also a sponsor to the largest Stand Up Paddle Board Expo in the Midwest. The TC Waterman Challenge and Expo will be held on August 8th this year. Taking place on Grand Traverse Bay, there will be courses for all age and skill levels. Demonstrations, clinics, and seminars are also available that day for those that are interested but not yet ready to tackle a race. With stand up paddleboarding rising in popularity, Wet Mitten Surf Shop is certainly worth visiting. Their website, Twitter, and Facebook pages are great ways to stay up to date with all of their upcoming activities and sales.
