One of the most common problems we all face with the holidays approaching is trying to brainstorm unique, thoughtful gifts for everyone on our lists. And while everyone loves a good pair of socks, and Dad always appreciates a new necktie, the Yellow Door Art Market may be just what you’re looking for if you’re trying to avoid those run-of-the-mill holiday gifts.

Yellow Door Art Market is a gallery-store hybrid where artists set up permanent ‘mini-galleries’ to display and sell their work. And while it may still be in its infancy –having just celebrated its first year of business in October– Yellow Door has already drawn significant attention from the community. Owners April and Steve McCrumb couldn’t be more thrilled. Steve says, “We’ve been beyond thrilled with the success of Yellow Door […] We’ve doubled our projected sales.”

It’s no question why; Yellow Door is an awesomely eclectic mix of local artists’ work. Boasting everything from paintings and photographs to clothes and jewelry, Yellow Door has something for every taste and budget. If you have yet to visit the Market, take their virtual tour to get an idea of what you’re missing. You will no doubt be taken aback at the overwhelming expanse of diverse handmade goods.

As with every feature on the Awesome Mitten, Yellow Door Market is proud to be a local business supporting local Michigan artists. Owner Steve McCrumb says, “There’s no doubt we definitely filled a retail niche that allows people to shop local all year long […] and the best part is 85% of all sales goes right back to the artist.”

And the artists that display their work at Yellow Door have taken notice of this camaraderie, as well. Gretchen Kramp, and award winning tile artist who just signed on to display her work at Yellow Door for another year, is just one artist vocalizing her appreciation of Steve and April’s vision. She says, “Yellow Door is providing a venue in which artists have a bit more creative control over the presentation and selection of work exhibited […] there’s an energy and excitement that carries into the displays and a greater sense of community among the artists as well.”

The Yellow Door Art Market website even goes beyond just supporting the artists who display their goods there; the page also has hip places to visit, must-stop spots in the city, upcoming art fairs, a way to discover new tunes, and even a list of featured charities. So if you’d like to check some names off of your holiday gift list without having to buy a boring gift card, head over to the Yellow Door Art Market. And be sure to follow them on Twitter and like them on Facebook to be in on the latest and greatest deals! ~Hayley Serr, Feature Writer
