Spicer Orchards of Hartland is a family owned and operated establishment that brings the best of fall to life. With five generations of farming under their belts, the Spicer family definitely knows how to produce an array of AWESOME fruits, donuts and cider with their own special twist.
Fresh fruit can be picked during the spring, summer and fall depending on when each fruit is in season. For easy convenience, Spicer’s offers a Fruit Harvest Ripening Calender on their website. Fruits include strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and many different kinds of apples. They also have pre-picked fruits in their shop for those who prefer not to pick their own.
When you first enter Spicer’s Store you see many flowers and pumpkins while being entertained by couple playing folk music. Spicer’s Store smells of fall goodness, offering candies, caramel apples and pies. However, the donuts are by far the highlight of Spicer Orchards. Plain, cinnamon, powdered and pumpkin cinnamon donuts can be smelled just by pulling in the parking lot. The donuts are so fresh you actually watch your donuts come off the press and be bagged. Relatives of the Spicer family can often be seen making donuts. Freshly made apple cider is also sold along side all the amazing donuts.
Spicer’s offers many fun activities for children. They have a petting farm, large tunnel slides and a farm play area. The farm area has a large hay barrel maze that you must crawl through, also they have mini pedal tractors to ride around as well. Pony rides are also available to children and are big hit. During the weekends, Spicer’s has large inflatable slides which add to all the fun.
Spicer Orchards also pays great attention to offering fun activities for adults in addition to childern. In 2009 they introduced Spicer’s Carriage House Cellars, its very own winery! More than twenty different flavors of fruit and grape wines can be found at the Carriage House Cellar.
My personal favorite was the cranberry wine with other flavors such as raspberry, honey and white, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Cabernet Franc and even a sparkling sweet peach and sweet raspberry. For those adults that are not too fond of wine, Spicer’s Carriage House Cellars makes Sweet William’s Hard Cider and Cherry Hard Cider. FREE wine tastings are available daily from May until January as well as visits to the vineyard. Discounts are also offered for the purchase of a case of 6 bottles or 12 bottles of wine. (Cases of holiday festive wines make great gifts!) To top it all off Spicer’s Carriage House Cellars also offers private tastings for ten or more adults including wine, cheese, crackers and chocolate. Sounds like an AWESOME holiday party idea!
Spicer’s is located just east of US-23 on Clyde Rd, where festivities and goodies can be enjoyed daily from 9am-7pm. ~Danielle Gordon, Regional Director
