It’s no secret that Grand Rapids has been booming with new events in the past couple years to showcase its talents, venues, and entertainment. Hoptoberfest, a brand new event to the area, is no exception. Hoptoberfest is a Michigan beers and blues fest, located right in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. As Shane Philipsen, the head of all promotions for Hoptoberfest, puts it: “the talent in this city amazes me on a daily basis. There is a very strong beer culture that is innovative and supportive. Mad respect to all the brewers out there. It truly is a science that is pushed to the limits.”
This Saturday, October 15th, from 2pm-11pm on Ionia Ave. Grand Rapids breweries will be showcasing their beers, while Michigan grown blues artists set the tone for fun. All along Ionia Ave, as well as in the large parking lot across from McFadden’s Bar, there will be booths and tents, a German beer garden, a food tent, and many local artisans showcasing their goods for sale. Tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance and at some participating local breweries, but will be sold for $15 the day of the event. (Please keep in mind that the event itself will be 21 and older).
Grand Rapids has become home to a number of breweries and pubs that have pushed our city into being a catalyst of Michigan craft beers. In an effort to celebrate these accomplishments, Hoptoberfest will feature and sell beer from HopCat, Founders Brewing Co., Brewery Vivant, White Flame Brewing Co., Schmohz Brewery, Hideout Brewing Co., Jaden James, Michigan Beer Cellar, and much more.
In addition to the amazing beers these Grand Rapids breweries have to offer, Hoptoberfest will be featuring Blues music the entire day. The headliner for the event will be legendary Chicago bluesman, Lonnie Brooks. Other artists will include: Stacy Mitchhart, Big James and the Chicago Playboys, and Rob Blaine’s Big Otis Blues.
Not only does Hoptoberfest provide a fun and unique beer and blues festival to Grand Rapids, but it stakes its deserved claim among other ventures in the area to shout praise for the hard work, dedication, and talent that our city’s businesses have to offer.
Be sure to purchase your tickets for Hoptoberfest today! Along with the beer, blues, and food, Philipsen promises many opportunities to watch our Michigan rivals, UofM and MSU, battle on the field during the day. (GO GREEN!) ~Kristin M. Coppens, Regional Director
