Breast Cancer Awareness in the Mitten

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Awesome Mitten cares about the events around the state that are increasing awareness, raising funds, and changing the future of cancer research. We are happy to support these events in different communities and are happy to share the awesome things everyone is doing around the state.

Michigan to go “Pure Michigan Pink” in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Statewide

Governor Snyder has mandated that all state social media accounts “go pink” throughout the month of October to promote awareness concerning breast cancer.

Making Strides – Statewide

American Cancer Society sponsors several non-competitive three to five mile events all over the United States. Many cities in Michigan proudly support these efforts. Here are some of the events:

  • October 12, 2013 – Making Strides of St. Clair County – St. Clair Community College
  • October 26, 2013 – Making Strides of Lansing – Michigan State Capitol
  • October 26, 2013 – Making Strides of Ann Arbor – Washtenaw Community College

BCBSM Goes Pink for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Statewide

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is in the midst of a three month campaign to #KickCancer. September’s focus was prostate cancer and the month of October shifts its focus to breast cancer awareness. Some events sponsored by BCBSM around the state are below:

October 7 through October 29, 2013 – Paint Big Rapids Pink – Big Rapids

Paint Big Rapids Pink sponsors several special events throughout the greater Big Rapids area. These events benefit the Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer and Wellness Fund, an endowment of the Big Rapids Hospital Foundation. Below are some of the local benefits:

  • Monday, October 7, 2013 – Stiletto Sprint, Girls’ Night Out, Boys’ Night Out
  • Saturday, October 12, 2013 – “Night of Wine for Days of Hope” Wine and Craft Beer Tasting
  • Friday, October 18, 2013 – Rolling for Pink – A Vegas Experience
  • Saturday, October 19, 2013 – “Pink in the Rink” FSU Hockey
  • Tuesday, October 29, 2013 – “Cry Until You Laugh”

Saturday, October 5, 2013 – Remembrance Run – Traverse City

This past weekend, many folks gathered to honor loved ones, raise awareness, and gather funds for breast cancer in northern Michigan.

Friday, October 18, 2013 – Maize and Blue Go Pink! – Detroit

Join Detroiters and Wolverines in this chic tailgate party to raise money for breast cancer awareness. At Cadillac Square in the heart of Detroit, supporters will walk the runway to support breast cancer research at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

October 12, 2013 & October 19, 2013 – U of M Athletics in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness – Ann Arbor

University of Michigan teams will wear pink as a part of their regular uniform to inspire breast cancer awareness, the games include:

  • October 12, 2013 – U of M Volleyball Game vs. Iowa
  • October 19, 2013 – U of M Football Game vs. Indiana

October 24, 2013 – Dig Pink! Competing for a Cause! – Newberry

Raising over $5,000 last year, the Engadine High School and Newberry Girls Volleyball teams will play to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research.

Saturday, October 26, 2013 – St. Mary’s of Michigan Annual Pink Out Game – Saginaw

Hockey game between Saginaw Spirit and the Barrie Colts in Saginaw to support St. Mary’s of Michigan and Seton Cancer Institute. Over 40 cancer survivors will be honored prior to the game in a special ceremony, folks are encouraged to nominate someone in their lives.

September 22, 2013 through October 18, 2013 – Paint Our Towns Pink – Southwest Michigan

Partnering with several local organizations, the Southwest Michigan Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate is striving to make breast cancer an important part of the conversation in their community. Below are just a few of their events:

  • Night Out in Your Little Black Dress on October 10, 2013 at Silver Beach Shadowland Ballroom in St. Joseph.
  • Art Hop on October 18, 2013 in Benton Harbor in honor of the local Komen for the Cure affiliate.
  • Mother/Daughter Princess Luncheon on October 20, 2013 at the Heritage Museum & Cultural Center in St. Joseph giving mothers and daughters the chance to dress up in their finest pinks and pay homage to those struggling with and surviving breast cancer. Tickets are available at The Heritage Museum, Silver Beach Center and The Coast radio station.
