Artcenter Traverse City, a 501c3 educational and charitable non-profit membership organization, has been a prominent facet of Northern Michigan’s artistic community since the 1950s. Artcenter Traverse City (ATC) supports the arts through collaboration with area artists, galleries, and Northwestern Michigan College.
Over the course of the past year, Artcenter TC has played a major part in a multitude of festivals, exhibits, and programs, including Art Rapids! in Elk Rapids, the Suttons Bay Art Festival, the Traverse City Wine & Art Festival, and the ATC Outdoor Art Fair on NMC’s campus. Classes and workshops offered by ATC not only educate and inspire experienced and new artists, but present them with invaluable business information, like how to market themselves and their work. August classes consist of “Freedom of Abstraction” and “Encaustic Collage.” ATC even presents scholarships to up-and-coming artists in order to assist them in furthering their educations in the arts.
One might assume that an arts center without an actual center per se may encounter some difficulties along its path of bringing culture to the masses. While it is true Artcenter Traverse City does not currently have a permanent place of residence, the fluidity of location and constant change of scenery allows for a certain creativity not often inspired by local art classes. At the moment, Artcenter TC utilizes college classrooms, gallery spaces and festivals to provide artists and art-appreciators with a space to display and educate. Although the ATC gallery is technically located in Williamsburg, ATC is looking to take up residence at Barns Park on the historic Grand Traverse Commons grounds.
Memberships with Artcenter Traverse City range from $30 (student/senior) to $1000 (Master of the Arts) and benefits include supporting the visual arts in the Grand Traverse community, discounted classes, workshops, lectures, and competitions, and the opportunity to meet and network with fellow artists, gallery owners, and outstanding members of society, as well as access to members-only meetings.
