In May 2014, Kzoo Uncaged interviewed Cindy and Heather Galbraith, the mother-daughter co-owners of Kalamazoo’s oldest coffee shop, Something’s Brewing. Since the interview, I have been on a Kalamazoo coffee drink exploration. The city has several local coffee shops, all with their own individual vibe and crowd, but also with their own unique flavor combinations and go-to orders.
The Odd Couple
Somewhere down the line, I got smacked with the foodie stick, hard. I love the idea of trying funky combinations and untraditional ingredients; I often make the crazy concoctions myself! Fabulous name aside, when I saw the Whatcha’mint’callit at Something’s Brewing, I had to try it.
The Whatcha’mint’callit is a latte flavored with chocolate, peanut butter, and yes, you guessed it, mint. Unfortunately, the combination is one that you may mistakenly think you want to miss, but it is delicious! The taste I noticed when I sipped my Whatcha’mint’callit for the first time was a mix of peanut butter-chocolate. Shortly after, it moved onto the mint-chocolate flavor. Honestly I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the flavors were very complimentary and smooth.
I ordered my Whatcha’mint’callit hot with almond milk, which Something’s Brewing offers as a non-dairy alternative instead of soy milk – fun right?! If your calendar allows it, visit Something’s Brewing on a Wednesday for Whatcha’mint’ Wed! You won’t regret it.
Classic. Milk, espresso, steamed. Black Owl Café does the classic right, heating it up to the exact temperature to make delicate designs atop the foam. The drink is classic in a way that makes me want to sip it slowly, not jug it and get all hopped up on caffeine.
Do yourself a favor and don’t order this one to go. While the latte might be classic, the atmosphere is a striking mix of old and new. It makes you feel like you have taken a jump in genre to an era with Harry Potter, or an old pub with knights sitting around the tables. It feels just the slightest bit magical.
The Fruity Twist
I don’t normally associated fruity flavors with my coffee. Whenever I treat myself and buy creamer it is usually named after a popular cake flavor or chocolate candy bar, not a fruit.
Raspberry, meet coffee. Coffee, meet raspberry.
Good! Now that that is settled, take yourself down to Water Street Coffee Joint (three locations in Kalamazoo to choose from!) and order a Raspberry White Chocolate Mocha. Since I also order mine with soy, I self proclaimed this order as one of the most annoying coffee orders – yes, some days I have a five word coffee request. The barista assured me that they have orders with word counts in the double digits, so I shouldn’t worry…I think he was just being nice.
This drink is sweet, but surprisingly refreshing, something you can’t help but keep coming back to. And don’t forget you’re getting a serving of fake fruit for the day so that is something to be proud of.
If you head over when the weather is nice, take a seat outside. They have shaded and sun soaking options, great for sitting and reading a book or chatting with a friend.
