As soon as I started planning my #MittenTrip to Port Austin, an instant trend arose: Every single person I asked for recommendations mentioned the Port Austin Farmer’s Market. Even when I got to the town and started talking to locals, it was all they could talk about. I was in luck too because holiday weekends are even more robust than the regular markets. On Saturday morning, I got a coffee at Green Clean Bean and started my adventure through the market full of everything imaginable.

Most weekends, there are at least 50 vendors, and on the Fourth of July and other holidays, there are well over 150 vendors. The wares range from the expected farm stands  to antiques, to flowers and artisan goods to craftspeople. I walked around for over an hour taking in the sights, smells, and tastes (so many samples!). I enjoyed gourmet and specialty meats (folks in Detroit just don’t understand venison), smoked fish, cheeses, dips, jams and jellies, and so many more delicious goods. The vendors were all excited and gracious while sharing their work with the milling crowds.

In order to better serve the community, Thumb Area Transit is piloting a busing program in Port Austin on Friday night and all day on Saturdays. The Farmer’s Market is a stop on the bus route, but it is also a perfect way to really take in all the area has to offer. Each journey costs just $1 and you don’t have to deal with the headaches of parking – it’s worth it!

Winner of several awards, I will attest that the Port Austin Farmer’s Market is in fact one of the best in Michigan. Each Saturday from late-May to mid-October, vendors and shoppers are invited to share in the excitement of “The Thumb” from 9 AM to 1 PM. I recommend coming hungry because those samples aren’t going to eat themselves! Want to learn more? Check out their website and Facebook for updates.
