During the highly anticipated University of Michigan vs Notre Dame football game over the weekend, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan launched a very important campaign. Prostate cancer is very treatable with early detection and the right care from a doctor. However, men are often reluctant to take those necessary measures. Andy Hetzel, Vice President of Corporate Communications for BCBSM, explains, “Blue Cross and the University of Michigan have been longstanding advertising partners. What we’re trying to do is take that relationship to another level and activate together around an issue that both organizations can share a common purpose for – we’ve found that in prostate cancer awareness.”
Not only is this an awareness campaign for cancer, but BCBSM and U of M have launched the Michigan Football Experience Sweepstakes. This is an opportunity for fans to enter to win an all expenses paid trip to watch Michigan play in their next bowl game. Four other winners will attend a two-day event where participants become a member of the Michigan Wolverines football team, led by Michigan Football Coach Brady Hoke and his staff, along with former University of Michigan coaching legends as a part of the Michigan Men’s Football Experience. Then, another five winners will attend the Michigan Women’s Football Academy where women get access to the inside of Michigan football, led by Michigan coaching staff, allowing participants to learn football basics during on-field training and access to usually off-limit areas like Schembechler Hall and the Glick and Oosterbaan Field Houses.
Not only are the prizes an amazing opportunity and definitely a worthwhile experience for any U of M football fan, but this is also the perfect capacity for BCBSM to help promote healthier lifestyles. The partnership between BCBSM and U of M is critical in continuing the work of the “Men of Michigan” Prostate Cancer Research Fund where the Experience has already been doing great work for cancer research and prevention since 2009. The Academy has been giving women a unique perspective on Michigan football since 1997 and benefits the Patient and Family Services Program at the University of Michigan’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.
It is essential to BCBSM that Michiganders take a more active role in their health and take all necessary steps to stay healthy, longer. “We’re trying to really connect with people in a meaningful way to get them to pay attention to something that is critical to their health and well-being,” explains Hetzel.
Throughout the fall, BCBSM will be working with different partners to promote positive relationships between patients and their healthcare providers. With the help of dedicated health professionals, BCBSM and its Awareness Team wants to elevate a dedication to #KickCancer. In October, the Awareness Team will be working with Michigan State University to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. In November, they will be working with the Detroit Lions to promote “Movember”, which is awareness for men’s health. Hetzel goes on to say, “We’ve found that working with these great partners is really helping to amplify an important message, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
